A franchise that was seemingly killed by a crushingly disappointing title has risen from the grave, as Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers, a new Disco Elysium-inspired CRPG, may win back the crowd after Bloodlines 2.

The Vampire: The Masquerade tabletop RPG has been adapted into some incredible games, most notably Bloodlines, which became a cult classic known for its incredible writing and dark subject matter. This all stems from the World of Darkness, which is a shared tabletop RPG universe, where monsters such as vampires, werewolves, and ghosts live in secret among humanity, and has been a favorite of gamers for decades.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers is set in contemporary Montreal. The protagonist is Gabe, a vampire who has awoken in the modern era. Gabe has ties to the Sabbat, a now defunct sect that once ruled Montreal, consisting of vampires that believed they should rule over humanity, and wanted to overthrow the founders of the Clans, who they believed had been plotting in the shadows for milennia.

In Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers, Gabe is joined by Sam, a thin-blood vampire with barely any powers, who acts as their guide. Together, they have to uncover Gabe’s connection to the Temple of Eternal Whispers, where horrific rituals were once performed.

It was revealed at the PC Gaming Show that Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers is on the way, one that’s heavily inspired by CRPGs like Disco Elysium, where dialogue and decisions are more important than overpowered builds.

Developed by Kwalee, Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers is clearly inspired by Disco Elysium, right down to how the character portraits are shown on screen. There are also hints of Baldur’s Gate 3, with dice rolls being used to determine outcomes, such as trying to intimidate a stranger.

What’s surprising about Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers is how similar the premise is to Bloodlines 2, as they both involve an old vampire awakening in the modern era, immediately relying on a companion to get them integrated into the setting, and having a connection to old powers.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers doesn’t have the pressure that Bloodlines 2 had, as it doesn’t carry the name of a beloved title. A big part of the reason why Bloodlines 2 was so disliked was that it was closer to something like Dishonored than its predecessor, with more of a focus on action than character dialogue or choices.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers feels like a huge step in the right direction, with a focus on story. The Disco Elysium-style is a far better choice than something like Baldur’s Gate 3, as Vampire: The Masquerade has less of a focus on combat and is more of a social game, though fighting is an option when all else fails.

One question the trailer has yet to answer is whether the player can select a Clan or not. In Vampire: The Masquerade, when someone is turned into an undead, they immediately share the same Clan as the person who turned them, which each having its own powers and weaknesses. While Vampire: The Masquerade – Eternal Whispers does have a customizable character, there’s no word on whether the player is stuck with one Clan, or can select from a list.

The Summer Game Fest season had some amazing announcements, but for longtime Vampire: The Masquerade fans, Eternal Whispers is easily the most exciting. This is the game they’ve waited for, and is the one that could potentially wash away the bad taste left by the underwhelming Bloodlines 2.
