The video game industry may be at a turning point. Prices are skyrocketing, AAA games are struggling to turn a profit, and new technologies like generative AI are disrupting the development process.

In this tense climate, it’s not uncommon to see major publishers limit their risks by sticking to developing sequels or remakes. Companies (outside the indie scene) that still resist this trend are facing pressure from their investors. This was particularly the case for FromSoftware.

The studio, known for titles like Dark Souls, Bloodborne, and Elden Ring, is one of the few that almost constantly creates original franchises. This hasn’t gone unnoticed by the shareholders of Kadokawa, FromSoftware’s parent company, who would like to see the teams shift toward “more mainstream content and sequels” to generate greater value.

A perspective not shared by the studio’s president, Hidetaka Miyazaki, who addressed this issue in an interview with Den Familia Gamer.

“First of all, I am generally satisfied with FromSoftware’s current development environment. Of course, there are areas for improvement, but we are free to create the games we want without excessive interference. And I believe that maintaining this environment in the future, allowing us to focus as much as possible on developing our games, is essential for me and for the entire FromSoftware team.

Finally, if any of our players are reading this message, we want to assure you that we will continue to work harder than ever to create high-quality games. We hope you’ll look forward to our upcoming titles, whether they’ve been announced yet or not.”

Among the studio’s upcoming games is, of course, The Duskbloods, which will be released this year on the Switch 2. A port of Elden Ring is also planned for the Nintendo console on August 28, 2026.
