Marvel Rivals’ “Villain Problem”

Marvel Rivals has been out for more than a year now. The hero-shooter published by NetEase is now packed with 51 different heroes, if we count Deadpool as a single character. Despite what Galacta says at the beginning of each match, asking players to choose their favorite “hero or villain”, there are far fewer options to choose from the latter. This has been a discussion topic among the community members for a while now. The only true playable “villains” on the roster right now are Hela and Ultron, while others are morally ambiguous or redeemable characters in the lore. But why is NetEase hesitant about dropping playable villains? Let’s explore.

Marvel Rivals: Potential Reason the Roster Lacks Villains

A casual player may not be aware of this, but each season brings fresh lore to the table. Marvel Rivals may be a super-packed hero shooter, but the devs don’t just drop characters out of the sky; they build towards it. The problem with having a playable villain would be trying to make it fit into the lore. Usually, supervillains have ulterior motives to form alliances. Hela and Ultron’s presence on the roster as malicious entities can be explained through this theory. Other villains, however, would have little to no motive to help out our heroes in a quest, and it would be too much lore if the devs tried explaining the ulterior motive behind every villain’s appearance.

This is why Marvel Rivals players see Season villains like Knull, Dracula, Kingpin, Apocalypse (expected to be the Season villain for Season 9), etc., only in the lore and gallery cards. Primarily because it would be difficult for the writers to explain why they are involved in heroic deeds every season. But players also have a reason to believe that more playable villains can work out because we have some names lined up for the rest of the year.

The gallery card at the end of Season 8.5 showcases Apocalypse in the center – a prominent X-Men antagonist. However, the lore behind the card teases two playable heroes that were leaked more than a year ago: The Hood & Jubilee. For those who don’t know, The Hood is a major antagonist in the comics and a recent MCU project called Iron Heart.

Additionally, data miners have found that Season 10 will give us Gorr the God Butcher and Nightcrawler, and Season 11 will finally bring Doctor Doom to the playable roster. In this case, both Gorr and Doom are villains with no redeeming qualities. So, it looks like the writers are trying to make up for fewer playable villains in Marvel Rivals by adding three this year! Hopefully, the fanbase will get more of them in the seasons to come.
