A PlayStation 5 remake of the original Uncharted was shelved in favour of The Last of Us: Part I. That’s according to Martin Kemp (“Thekempy” on YouTube) who recently uploaded an excellent, exhaustive deep dive into Naughty Dog’s original version of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End before the departure of its director, Amy Hennig. Honestly, it’s a fascinating watch.
Kemp was recently on episode 517 of the Sacred Symbols podcast, hosted by former IGN editor Colin Moriarty. He tells how an attempt to remake Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune for the PS5 was underway at Naughty Dog several years ago, with the assistance of PlayStation’s Visual Arts Service Group.
Apparently, the team remade a section of Nathan Drake’s first adventure with Uncharted 4’s level of graphics. However, after realising the sheer scope of what a full-blown remake would entail, Naughty Dog switched its focus, developing The Last of Us: Part I instead.
Was it the right choice? Despite Naughty Dog’s track record for rehashing TLOU, there’s no denying that Part I offers an incredible upgrade over the PS3 original, and was deployed at just the right time, scooping up new fans who had watched HBO’s hit television series. In our review we called it “an impressively gorgeous remake of a bonafide masterpiece. Just don’t expect that hefty price tag to bring much more than cosmetic feeling changes to this emotional narrative.”
Drake’s Fortune is an all-time great, though it’s hard to imagine a remake topping the combined excellence of Uncharted 4 and its standalone spin-off, The Lost Legacy. Still, we’re not completely against the idea of Naughty Dog revisiting that first game, especially if it gives the team an opportunity to expand and explore some deeper Uncharted lore.
For now, the series’ future is still a mystery with rumours suggesting that it’s been handed off to another first party studio – namely Bend Studio of Days Gone fame. As for Naughty Dog, it’s been a while since we’ve had a substantive update on the team’s upcoming sci-fi adventure game, Intergalactic. Although it may have missed the recent State of Play broadcast, we’re hoping it will resurface sooner rather than later.
