War Fantasy is “the anti Call of Duty” and aims a kick to the groin of the games industry and its relentless gamification of conflict
Okay, so I was up late. I mean really late watching the World Cup so maybe a tad on the delirious side first thing but the trailer for the upcoming game by a former Call of Duty dev really caught my attention.
It’s called War Fantasy and is being billed as The Stanley Parable meets Spec Ops: The Line. Now I hate the PR-isms of saying a game is X meets X – it’s a hacky way of getting attention, but for once here, at least, it seems to ring true.
Let’s start by watching the trailer.
If you did, and you are still with me, I think you are also going to be of the mind that that was pretty cool.
There’s not a ton of information out yet, other than you can wishlist the game on Steam and the slogan, “This is not a power fantasy. There is no heroism here. The boundary between simulation and reality is collapsing. There is only the next instruction.”
War Fantasy has been in development for nine years by former CoD Nathan Tran, who’s billing it as “the anti Call of Duty” and as “a game that exposes how war is sold to gamers and makes you question every war game you’ve ever played.”
It sounds as though Tran and friends are trying to make a statement that maybe the desperation to get that kill streak and succession of head shots may be more than just healthy fun, The release notes give us: “An unflinching examination of gaming’s ever-present relationship with violence and the machinery of warfare. This game will not pull punches or ignore the tragic cost of conflict. Player actions have consequences.”
So, I’m intrigued at the very least. I am not one of those “violence in games breeds violence” people in the slightest, but it might be nice for once to get a counterbalance to the jingoistic argument force-fed to our kids, that war is merely the inevitable rinse and repeat (with a few microtransactions thrown in for good measure.
