Nintendo has officially commented on the European law that will require companies to offer devices with replaceable batteries starting in mid-February 2027.
To comply with the legislation, the Japanese company has announced that it will gradually replace its devices with models featuring replaceable batteries. This process will begin as early as this summer of 2026. Other products will follow suit in the fall, winter, and early 2027. This change may sometimes affect the battery capacity of certain devices.
The neon blue and neon red Joy-Cons will be the first to be affected this summer. The Switch 2 will be equipped with a removable 5,172 mAh battery (down from the current 5,220 mAh) starting this fall. Next will be the Joy-Con 2 and the Switch 2 Pro Controller during the winter. For the latter, the battery capacity will drop to 897 mAh from 1,070 mAh (a 16% reduction).
Finally, early next year, the Nintendo 64 controllers for the Nintendo Switch and the Nintendo GameCube controllers for the Switch 2 will undergo a similar change. Note that the GameCube controller will then have a 525 mAh battery, up from 500 mAh previously (+5%).
The Nintendo Store will offer battery kits for each product.
