Last week, the first reported case of the Red Line of Death on a Steam Machine was shared on Reddit. Valve’s error message seemed to point to a GPU failure, and some users feared they might suffer the same fate.
In the end, the user affected by the problem reported that they were able to resolve it by simply resetting the CMOS. To do this, you need to unplug the device and press the power button repeatedly to discharge the stored power from the unit. Then, simply plug the Steam Machine back in and hold down the power button for six seconds to select various troubleshooting options. Once the LED turns green, it’s recommended to press the power button to perform a full CMOS reset. The next boot will be accompanied by a blue progress bar, but may take a little longer than usual.
This procedure was shared by Valve. The American company also clarified that the Steam Machine’s LED indicator was horizontally inverted, causing misleading readings. What was mistaken for a GPU failure due to this display was actually just the memory running through a test.
