The wave of layoffs that hit Xbox this week has had devastating effects on some studios. As a result, id Software has cut 136 positions (96 in-house and 40 external). A veritable purge, particularly among the coders, nearly all of whom have been laid off.
Many are therefore wondering about the future of the American studio known for DOOM and Quake. Furthermore, there were rumors that the high-performance, in-house id Tech engine was set to be completely abandoned. However, an article on the Windows Central website seems to prove otherwise.
Journalist Jez Corden believes that despite the departures, « solid expertise » in id Tech remains at id Software and MachineGames (Wolfenstein). Furthermore, Xbox reportedly has no intention of forcing its studios to switch to the Unreal Engine. As a result, id Tech is expected to continue being used on DOOM, Quake, and possibly other titles.
In total, several dozen people across various studios are reportedly still working on the famous engine.
