Amid the utterly toxic climate currently plaguing the video game industry, we must look to Japan to find a glimmer of optimism. Indeed, most Japanese publishers are doing well—and they’re making sure everyone knows it.
Koei Tecmo, known for Dead or Alive, Dynasty Warriors, Nioh, and Fatal Frame, spoke to Famitsu through its CEO. On this occasion, Hisashi Koinuma discussed the company’s recent strong growth.
Between 2024 and 2025, the company grew from 2,500 to 2,850 employees, and now stands at over 3,000, thanks in part to hiring efforts in China. Furthermore, Koinuma reiterated his goal of reaching a workforce of 5,000 in mid-term. Hiring is expected to continue at a steady pace, and internal training programs are currently underway to develop talent.
Finally, Koei Tecmo also plans to handle the global publishing of its games directly rather than through a partner. While previous titles were published by Sony, Nioh 3 will be self-published.
