This is news that might be a little hard to hear. An annual study by the Japan Online Game Association (JOGA) reveals that 100% of the Japanese online game development companies surveyed now use generative AI tools in their development process. However, this does not represent the entire Japanese industry, but only the member companies participating in this specialized survey.
Among them are Google Gemini (94% of respondents), Claude (84%), and GitHub Copilot (76%). The report indicates that AI is used for production and analysis tasks, including analyzing player preferences, predicting user behavior, assisting with programming, creating documents, and supporting certain stages of development.
The use of AI therefore appears to be much more widespread than previously thought. It should be noted once again that the study focuses on online games: PC titles without a multiplayer mode are therefore not included. However, in April 2026, Jack Buser, the director of games at Google Cloud, stated that a large number of the biggest game development studios use AI, but that not all of them are yet comfortable discussing it.
One thing is certain: AI will continue to be a hot topic.
