Glen Schofield, creator of Dead Space and founder of several major studios (Visceral Games, Sledgehammer Games, and Striking Distance Studios), has announced his retirement from the video game industry after approximately 35 years.
In a video posted on LinkedIn, he explains that he is stepping back from day-to-day development work. He thanks his teams, his loved ones, and the players, while describing the video game industry as “incredible” in spite of the current challenges.
Schofield looks back on a career marked by several major successes: the inception of Dead Space at Visceral Games; the co-founding Sledgehammer Games, where he contributed to the Call of Duty series; and the creation of Striking Distance Studios, which developed The Callisto Protocol.
The end of his career was a tad more complicated. The Callisto Protocol did not meet its hoped-for commercial goals, leading to his departure from Striking Distance in 2023. More recently, he also revealed that he had been unable to secure funding for a new horror game project. Despite his departure, Schofield remains optimistic about the industry’s future. He encourages the next generation of developers to experiment and prioritize creative ideas, believing that these are what drive the industry forward.
