The World Cup is getting serious – best bring Shrek into the new FIFA Heroes game where you can spend £99.99 on in-app purchases – kill me now

The World Cup has reached the semi-final stage, and somehow the official FIFA mobile game has decided now is the perfect moment to sell me Shrek.

FIFA Heroes – the game that the marketing speak refers to as the “football game for mobile-first football fans” has put me in a bad mood already this morning.

Look, I get I am probably not the target audience for this nonsense, but the fact it is Shrek’s 25th anniversary literally anything to do with the World Cup and the important semi-finals going on right now? I’m not even putting a Wayne Rooney gag in here, as I am aware our audience probably won’t get it, but it’s there for the taking if you want it.

And man, “mobile-first” is making me wretch a bit.

The Shrek content is part of the new Season Pass for the five a side football extravaganza sporting the official FIFA licence – long gone are the days of Haaland and Messi as the cover stars of our favourite recreation of the beautiful game.

Instead now, because kids have the attention span of the approximate length of how long it takes to complete the purchase of a micro transaction, we have FIFA Heroes. “The game brings together football icons, FIFA World Cup Mascots, creators, mythical characters, and crossover figures in short, competitive, arcade-style matches built for quick play and shareable moments.

Anything that can be monetized then?

Just. Stop. Please. Look I know I am not the audience so I did a little digging on the app page FIFA Heroes: Football Action to give it its full title, has In-App purchases. No shock there. Enjoy this next bit:

Among the available in-app purchases is a £99.99 bundle, sitting alongside numerous smaller purchases. Whether anyone actually buys that top tier is another matter, but its presence in a game carrying a 9+ age rating is certainly eye-catching.

And in case you didn’t find that unsavoury enough, there’s also a warning, “Contains Loot Boxes and Advertising.”

When my kids were younger and playing predatory mobile games, even though I had a lock on App Store spending, I would quite often get a pop up on my phone to approve a transaction for a large number of gems for some game or other. Sometimes it was like, £50 or something. You see, kids don’t understand the cost of money. Kids don’t want to wait. Not everybody has appropriate locks downs on purchases. You can’t say, “well that’s their fault then.”

It’s not just me is it?

Anyway, for the sake of doing my job properly:

Shrek Season Pass details:

  • Dates: 13th July to 10th August
  • Characters: Shrek, Fiona, Puss in Boots, Gingy, Pinocchio and Lord Farquaad
  • Rewards: Shrek and two additional characters, six character emojis, avatars including Donkey, and a unique goal celebration.

FIFA Heroes is available now on iOS and Android, and coming soon to PC and consoles.
