Blizzard announces a new Diablo entry and significant updates for Warcraft at BlizzCon 2026.
This week, Blizzard has dominated gaming headlines with a series of significant announcements at BlizzCon 2026, showcasing notable expansions for two of its longest-running franchises, Diablo and Warcraft.
Diablo 5 Goes Post-Apocalyptic
During BlizzCon, Blizzard unveiled Diablo 5, introducing what appears to be a drastic thematic shift for the series. Set to launch in 2029, the game takes a post-apocalyptic turn with angels being crucified and the Sanctuary’s world teetering on the edge of a grim demise. While the cinematic trailer did not provide any gameplay insights, the announcement of another game in the main series just six years after Diablo 4 suggests a shift in Blizzard’s approach to release schedules. Whether this indicates a strategy to ramp up release frequencies or a specific story-driven necessity remains to be seen.
World of Warcraft: New Updates and Expansions
BlizzCon also brought exciting news for World of Warcraft players. WoW: Midnight is set to introduce new class and race combinations, allowing Night Elves, Undead, and Trolls to become Paladins. This is a notable expansion of player options in the middle of an expansion cycle, marking a first in the game’s 22-year history.
Simultaneously, Blizzard introduced WoW Forever, a title aimed at rejuvenating the Classic Azeroth experience with fresh content while retaining its initial gameplay feel.
