Blizzard shifts its development focus from Diablo 4 to its sequel, halting all major expansions.
This week’s standout in gaming news is undoubtedly Blizzard’s decisive shift in focus from Diablo 4 back to the larger Diablo series narrative, emphasizing the upcoming Diablo 5. According to Destructoid and GameSpot, Blizzard announced at BlizzCon that it would cease major expansion releases for Diablo 4, opting instead to concentrate resources on the development of Diablo 5, set for a 2029 release. Game director Brent Gibson explained that the story arc introduced in Diablo 4, particularly the “Story of Hatred,” is considered complete, and the team will divert its attention towards “telling the story of Terror” in Diablo 5. Meanwhile, players can expect ongoing seasonal content for Diablo 4 despite the halt in expansions.
Adding to the anticipation for Blizzard fans, Diablo 5 was unveiled with some nostalgic nods. As reported by GameSpot, the upcoming title will include three new classes: the Monk and Demon Hunter returning from Diablo 3, and the new Plague Knight. The Plague Knight is an intriguing addition known for spreading disease and consuming it for power, reminiscent of the Death Knights from Blizzard’s other fantasy franchise.
In other news, Overwatch players have something to tide them over with the upcoming GamesHub report on the “Doctrine” Hero Trial, which runs until September 14. While the launch date for Season 5 remains unannounced, this trial serves as a tease for what’s next in the Overwatch universe.
For those nostalgic for the PlayStation 2 era, a new update on collectible game prices by GameRant points to rising values, with MS Saga: A New Dawn breaking into the top 30 list.
Lastly, Ubisoft fans on Steam might find gameplay a bit easier as GameRant reports Ubisoft is testing a system that no longer requires their Ubisoft Connect launcher for titles like Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown. This could streamline access and improve user experience for PC players.
