World’s Edge cancels a new game, as Xbox layoffs impact the Age of Empires studio.
The gaming industry sees another impact of corporate restructuring as World’s Edge cancels a new project due to significant layoffs at Xbox. While the studio responsible for the Age of Empires franchise has generally been shielded from the layoff storm, the loss of “half the studio,” including creative director Adam Isgreen, has led to the shelving of their latest untitled project. As part of Microsoft’s gaming segment, which now includes Activision, this development underscores the ongoing impact of corporate decisions on game development.
Game Patches and Updates
Helldivers 2 is receiving significant updates with its patch 7.1.0. The update focuses on rebalancing enemy encounters and adjusting evacuation missions, along with weapon buffs, cooldown changes, and critical bug fixes. Such updates are crucial for maintaining player engagement and addressing community feedback, a standard practice in live-service games.
Bungie’s Marathon is set for a transformative series of updates, expanding the game “beyond extraction”. Starting with October’s Nightfall Refresh, the updates culminate in December with the Symbiosis update, adding a permanent PvE mode. This move aims to broaden the game’s appeal by providing spaces where players can enjoy the game’s universe without constant multiplayer pressure, responding directly to community desires for more varied gameplay experiences.
Control Resonant also sees adjustments in its recent release, with Hotfix 1.3.3 focusing on making enemies less tanky and improving Dylan’s power levels. Remedy Entertainment’s tweaks aim to enhance the overall gameplay flow, a crucial feature in keeping players invested in the narrative-rich title.
Player Preferences and Developer Adjustments
Call of Duty is addressing longstanding community feedback by introducing skin filtering in its upcoming Modern Warfare 4. This allows players to choose whether they see only theme-appropriate skins, a feature particularly welcomed after the backlash from previously wacky additions like Beavis And Butt-Head operators.
New Releases
A subtle yet significant release is on the horizon for The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess. A new tie-in is expected in October, though it remains somewhat under the radar, likely overshadowed by the absence of modern console compatibility for the original game. The demand for accessing classic Zelda titles on current platforms continues to be a notable issue for fans.
