BioWare, acclaimed for titles like Mass Effect, is closing, with EA terminating upcoming projects amid broad restructuring.
In a significant upheaval for the gaming industry, Electronic Arts (EA) has announced the closure of BioWare, the esteemed studio known for iconic series such as Mass Effect and Dragon Age. This development was confirmed through several reports from Destructoid, GameRant, and GameSpot. The closure reportedly affects approximately 400 employees, with 50 layoffs directly impacting BioWare and others across EA.
This decision comes amid a broader EA restructuring, as noted in a GameSpot report that details how EA is reassessing its business strategy, which involved canceling several projects, including the much-anticipated new Mass Effect title that was under development at BioWare. These changes are part of an overarching corporate realignment, affecting about 3% of EA’s total workforce.
BioWare’s closure marks the end of an era, as the studio had been a cornerstone of RPG gaming since the 1990s, reaching critical acclaim with titles like Baldur’s Gate and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic. The studio’s most recent release, Dragon Age: The Veilguard, debuted in 2024 but did not achieve EA’s sales expectations.
