Before Astro Bot ruled the mascot roost for Sony, there were a handful of characters that were considered part of PlayStation’s mascot stable. Headlining the stage were Crash Bandicoot, Ratchet & Clank, Jak & Daxter, and Sly Cooper.

While the heyday of mascot platformers is long gone, the resurgence of Astro Bot might pave the way for the genre to return for PlayStation.

If it is, cross out Sly Cooper from the mascots list, as it doesn’t look like we’ll see the franchise revived anytime soon.

Sucker Punch Themselves Aren’t Keen On Returning To Sly Cooper Franchise

In an interview via the MinnMax show, Ghost of Yotei game director Nate Fox was asked if, hypothetically, the studio had a meeting tomorrow, and Fox said that a new Sly Cooper game was their next project, what percentage of studios would be on board. Fox says it would only be 10%, which is surprising to hear.

Of course, the first game in the franchise was released way back in 2002, so there is a good chance most Sucker Punch developers don’t have fond memories of the franchise. Fox even adds that “It’s been a long time since Sly Cooper’s come out,” which further hammers home how most Sucker Punch devs probably don’t have a nostalgia factor to consider for the series.

Add in the fact that platformers generally aren’t considered AAA gaming fare these days, and well, you get the idea why even the developers aren’t excited to make a new Sly Cooper game.

The last Sly Cooper game Sucker Punch released was Sly 3: Honor Among Thieves for the PS2 back in 2005. Since then, the developer has kept its distance from the franchise. We did get Sly Cooper: Thieves in Time for the PS3 and PS Vita back in 2013, though development duties were handed to Sanzaru Games instead of Sucker Punch.

Sucker Punch might not be releasing a new Sly Cooper game anytime soon, but the studio has Ghost of Yotei set for release at the start of October. Based on the review embargo lift, the studio is very confident it will score well, which wouldn’t surprise us at all. Once the game’s out, the work won’t end there for the developers, as the Legends DLC multiplayer mode still needs time in the oven for its release in 2026.

Will we see Sly Cooper once again? Perhaps if Astro Bot’s succeeding entries continue to thrive, we’ll see the thieving raccoon have their time in the spotlight once again.
