While acquisitions and mergers are nothing new in the world of entertainment, it seems we might be seeing one happen soon, and it will involve some big-name franchises when it comes to games.

Warner Bros Discovery, the parent company of Warner Bros. Interactive, is said to be eyed by Paramount-Skydance.

This has huge implications for the entertainment world, given the huge list of franchises and IPs under Warner Bros. If the deal goes through, some of our favorite gaming properties could have a new home.

Paramount-Skydance Said To Be Preparing Bid For Warner Bros. Discovery

The report comes from The Wall Street Journal (paywalled), and mentions that Paramount-Skydance, which is fresh from its own merger, is now readying a majority cash bid for Warner Bros. Discovery.

This acquisition bid is for the entire company, and includes the cable networks, film studios, HBO, DC Studios, and, of course, the gaming division. This means that Warner Bros.-owned gaming studios NetherRealm (Mortal Kombat, Injustice), Rocksteady (Batman Arkham), WB Montreal (Gotham Knights), and Portkey Games (Hogwarts Legacy) will transition to another owner.

Part of the planned acquisition is due to pressure for media consolidation that we’ve seen recently with various mega-corporations. The decline of TV viewership and theatrical box office revenue, and the rising production cost of film, TV, and gaming, all contribute to media consolidation.

This isn’t the first time a buyout for Warner Bros. made headlines. In June, it was rumored that Sony was eyeing to acquire the entire company, though we didn’t hear anything about it.

It’s been a wild rollercoaster ride for Warner Bros. when it comes to gaming. While Hogwarts Legacy sold better than hotcakes to the point that it became a big focus at the company, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League failed so badly that it resulted in layoffs.

It got so bad that multiple game studios were shut down by Warner Bros., as the Wonder Woman game was canceled. However, even after that, it’s rumored they are still making another DC Comics live-service game, which is something WB never confirmed.
