In today’s dNintendo Direct, the company announced several new projects in coordination with the Super Mario Bros. 40th anniversary.
After Shigeru Miyamoto briefly introduced the anniversary celebration, detailing how concept art from several Mario games would be featured in the Kyoto Nintendo Museum, Miyamoto announced that the sequel to 2023’s The Super Mario Bros. Movie will be The Super Mario Galaxy Movie.
Once again produced by Universal Pictures, Illumination, and Nintendo, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie will be released to theaters in April 2026 and feature multiple returning cast members.
In coordination with the 40th anniversary and the upcoming Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo additionally announced that both 2007’s Super Mario Galaxy and 2010’s Super Mario Galaxy 2 will be coming to Nintendo Switch platforms.
Mario’s Sensational Galactic Return
While Super Mario Galaxy 1 was previously released for the Nintendo Switch 1 on the 2020 compilation Super Mario 3D All-Stars, more players than ever before will soon be able to play through the entire Super Mario Galaxy duology on both the Nintendo Switch 1 and 2.
Starting on Thursday, October 2nd, players will be able to purchase physical copies of Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the Nintendo Switch, which will be backwards compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2.
Players can additionally purchase digital copies of either Super Mario Galaxy 1 or 2 on the Nintendo eShop starting on October 2nd.
This isn’t a simple compilation rerelease of the Super Mario Galaxy duology, however, as Super Mario Galaxy + Super Mario Galaxy 2 will both feature Rosalina’s library and storybooks with brand-new pages.
Rosalina’s storybook will further be made into a real-life book for purchase but without the brand-new pages.
On Thursday, April 2nd, 2026, nearing the premiere of The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, Nintendo will release two brand-new Galaxy-themed Mario and Rosalina amiibo figures to use on Nintendo Switch platforms.
