2025 has been a big year for Xbox Game Pass, and people have noticed.
Just take a look at some of the marquee games that have been released on Microsoft’s subscription service this year:
Not only are four out of those five titles developed outside the Xbox Games Studios umbrella, but they were all day-one releases.
There’s also the upcoming release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 on Game Pass when the game launches on November 14th.
It turns out that three of these games have something in common: they’re the highest-rated games of the year, according to Metacritic. Also, before you say something: Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom don’t count; they’re the Switch 2 versions of games that came out in years prior.
2025 Saw Xbox’s Largest Game Pass Investment Ever
ID@Xbox’s Chris Charla recently spoke to Eurogamer, highlighting the investments Microsoft has made in Xbox Game Pass. If you’ve been someone who has noticed that there seems to be a bigger investment from Xbox when it comes to Game Pass offerings, you’d be right.
Last year, we worked with over 50 teams to sign their first Game Pass deal. This year marks our largest investment in Game Pass to date, and we remain focused on delivering the most exciting and diverse catalogue in gaming.
Charla also mentions that a “majority of partners who’ve had a game in Game Pass want to bring their future titles to the service.” He touts that over 150 partners have signed deals, expanding Game Pass’ library. As to how they’re finding these games, Charla adds that they’re finding them “everywhere.”
“We find them by spending time in the Indie Arena [at Gamescom]. We find them by people sending us direct messages on BlueSky… We find them from people all around Microsoft being like, hey, have you seen this game? And we find them from having friends who make games who say – hey, you need to see my friend’s game. And from people just emailing us!”
There’s no guarantee that every game on Xbox Game Pass will be the next Hollow Knight or Expedition 33, but the addition of smaller games like Atomfall, The Alters, and Blue Prince can help give these titles recognition they would otherwise miss out on.
Jason Kingsley, CEO of Atomfall developer Rebellion, said earlier this year that Game Pass helped give the game “a lot of exposure.” Miles Jacobson, studio head for Football Manager developer Sports Interactive, also recently talked about the benefits of Game Pass.
