It turns out that the leaks were real. One of the biggest games in the Yakuza franchise is finally getting remade.
As announced at the RGG Summit 2025 during Tokyo Game Show week, SEGA confirmed that Yakuza Kiwami 3, a modern remake of Yakuza 3, is on the way.
“It’s not just the characters, but the graphics and the gameplay that will be significantly changed,” Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio said after the game’s reveal trailer. “Players of the original Yakuza 3 have already noticed, but there’s going to be added scenes. And the cast from 16 years ago for this version will be significantly changed as well. For us, this is the best remake we could imagine.”
Yakuza Kiwami 3 Is The Long Awaited Modern Remake Of The Yakuza Franchise’s Most Important Game
Just like the other Kiwami games that remade the original two Yakuza games, there will be more changes to what veterans are familiar with, including the game’s story, graphics, and gameplay aspects. “Players can look forward to a lot of changes, but when it comes to this game’s theme…a legend is reborn.”
RGG confirmed that this isn’t a simple remaster, but a ground-up remake from scratch, using their in-house game engine.
Ironically, they talked about how this will help new players to the franchise enjoy the experience, but here’s the thing about Yakuza 3: its gameplay is incredibly dated.
Despite being the most important game in the Yakuza franchise story-wise, saying that the gameplay is rough around the edges is putting it lightly. As a result, many people skip playing the game and instead watch a video walkthrough on YouTube.
Earlier this year, Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut was released as a launch title for the Nintendo Switch 2. It’s expected to be released on PS5 and PC later this year.
