Following the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the console has seen several third-party ports.

Given that the past generation was lacking in this regard, it’s been nothing but good news. Those who only owned a Nintendo Switch missed out on some pretty incredible third-party experiences.

In fact, they were able to experience some of these at launch, notably with Cyberpunk 2077 and Yakuza 0: Director’s Cut.

Sadly, it seems like most third-party Switch 2 ports are lacking in the performance department. There’s been plenty of controversy in this regard, not just with the utilization of the game-key card function, but also with the overall performance. Borderlands 4 was recently delayed for the Switch 2, and other third-party games are reportedly not up to the task of running efficiently.

There is, however, one upcoming third-party game that’s apparently up to the challenge, and it’s the one I least expected.

One of the biggest surprises with the most recent Nintendo Direct was the announcement of Resident Evil Requiem for the Nintendo Switch 2.

The franchise’s reboot of Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village skipped the Nintendo Switch, but Capcom will be bringing these games to the Switch 2, allowing fans to experience them in all their glory.

Seeing Resident Evil 7 and Village in action on the Switch 2, in theory, shouldn’t be an issue. These are both older games, and the Switch 2’s hardware will undoubtedly be up to the task. Requiem, however, is a brand-new game that will release on the same day on PS5, Xbox, PC, and Switch: February 27th, 2026. Look, I love my Switch 2, but I’m honest with myself: it is not as powerful as those other three platforms.

That’s not a problem for Capcom, though, as not only were they able to get the game running on Nintendo’s newest console, but they were also impressed with its performance. Game Director Koshi Nakanishi told Famitsu that he was surprised by how well the game ran on the Switch 2 hardware.

To begin with, this game is made to be fairly scalable. We’ve been making it by adjusting various options so that it can be compatible with a wide range of specs, from high to relatively low, so the Switch 2 can be optimized to suit the specs quite smoothly.

Nakanishi credits the game’s engine for allowing Resident Evil Requiem to run smoothly on Switch 2, allowing players to experience the gameplay as intended. There are no handcuffs or limitations here; this is an authentic Requiem experience, played as intended, on all platforms, including the “underpowered” Switch 2.

If anything, this seems to indicate that the problem with Switch 2 ports isn’t necessarily from the console itself, but stems from each game’s engine. As more developers get their hands on dev kits and become accustomed to the platform, here’s to hoping we see more third-party ports.
