The samurai Imagawa Tomeji is one of the most prominent and deadly antagonists Naoe and Yasuke must face off against in Assassin’s Creed Shadows Claws of Awaji DLC.

Once a loyal confidant to the Japanese daimyo Templar Kimura Kei, who Yasuke slayed during his quest to rid the Japanese mainland of Templars, Tomeji is now the sworn protector of Kei’s daughter, Yukari, as the two strive to assert an oppressive Templar control over Awaji and beyond.

Tomeji is actually briefly playable in the Claws of Awaji side-scrolling intro puppet show, but after Yasuke nearly eliminates him during his rescue of Naoe and Tsuyu, Tomeji will only become vulnerable after Naoe is forced to hand over the Imperial Regalia Kusanagi no Tsurugi to Yukari during the main questline.

While Tomeji’s boss fight isn’t as unique as Nowaki’s, he’s no pushover, and he’ll still put up quite a tough fight if players rush to defeat him as soon as his A Garrison to Dismantle quest becomes available.

Where to Find Tomeji and His Captains

As soon as players receive the A Garrison to Dismantle quest, they can instantly head off to the southwest end of Sumoto Castle to face off against Tomeji as either Naoe or Yasuke after briefly speaking with Hattori Hanzo‘s friend Konatsu.

However, I would not recommend this course of action, as players would not only have to face Tomeji in this case, but also 10 of his powerful captains all at once. This isn’t impossible to do, but there’s a much easier way to eliminate Tomeji.

Instead, I would recommend hunting down each of Tomeji’s 14 captains who can be found on patrols throughout Awaji before facing the head Templar himself, as Tomeji’s much easier to take down when he’s alone.

There are three ways players can find the 14 captains in Awaji:

  1. Simply roam around the roads and paths of Awaji until you stumble upon a patrolling captain.
  2. Fight local guards throughout the island until one of them alerts a captain or two for help, causing captains to spawn nearby.
  3. Help civilians being oppressed by guards who will then give Naoe or Yasuke a captain’s location as recompense.

In my experience, it was much easier to just fight local guards until one or two of the captains spawned, but I also found that saving civilians near the Fukura Kakurega on the western part of the island consistently led to a captain’s location.

Dismantling Tomeji and His Captains

Each of Tomeji’s captains are escorted by at least two guards, are typically a few levels above the player, and wield powerful weapons such as naginatas, kanabos, teppos, and even the new bo staff, making them tough foes to take down.

Speed and strength are essential to take these captains down, and while Naoe can somewhat effectively take the captains and their entourage down with kusarigamas and the tanto Hidden Hand ability, Yasuke has overall better defense and skills to take them down.

I often used Yasuke’s long katana Wind Slash and Power Dash abilities to quickly deal a lot of damage against the captains and their guards.

Once all the guards are dealt with, the player can take on Tomeji at Sumoto Castle alone in a wide but enclosed arena with no access to supportive allies.

For the same reasons I mentioned above, I recommend playing as Yasuke for this boss fight. Plus, Yasuke and Tomeji have a more personal grudge against each other than Naoe has towards the Templar.

Tomeji only wields a kanabo, but he isn’t slow like other kanabo wielders, often being able to block arrows and teppo shots and being able to sprint and leap towards Yasuke once his armor is destroyed.

To deal damage on Tomeji, players will need to get close but remain cautious as Tomeji can knock the player off their feet, grab and crush them, and cause shock waves on the ground with his kanabo.

Using swift abilities such as Wind Slash and Power Dash are key, but I also recommend using the Howl of the Dragon legendary amulet and steel teppo bullets after Tomeji’s armor is destroyed, as they will stagger him and open him up to lethal critical attacks.

Tomeji’s Hidden Treasures

Once Tomeji is defeated, players will be rewarded with the Templar’s legendary kanabo Boneshaker, which features an alternate combo ender perk engraving that knocks down large and armored enemies.

While Boneshaker is a viable boon for kanabo players, those who defeat all of Tomeji’s captains before or after the boss fight will also be awarded with a letter called Tomeji’s Prize.

This letter details a hidden treasured item Tomeji hid away in either Yura Castle during the winter and summer or Sumoto Castle during the spring and autumn.

The Yura Castle item can be found in a western storage kura, the typically locked shed-like structures that hold resources for scouts to recover, while the Sumoto Castle item can be found in the stable kura.

Both locations will feature the item atop some supplies near the kura’s door and reward the player with the Master Fisherman’s Kasa legendary helmet and the Last Stand engraving perk which causes Yasuke to avoid death but lose health until an enemy is killed.
