The world of Atomfall is full of interesting oddities and subversive surprises. While it may all seem quite straightforward on the surface, the quarries and caverns of Northern Britain can actually be a tough place to navigate at times, particularly when it comes to the underground networks and their various entrances throughout the game world.
Atomfall’s “Quarantine Zone” is made up of four main overground sections with interlinking underground passages via a large scientific facility known as The Interchange.
Each area has its own distinct theme, enemy types, loot and side quests, and you’ll have to explore each one at some point on your way to completing the game.
Though the game does provide you with area maps for each one, it isn’t always clear how to progress into the next area. Keep in mind that not all areas are friendly, and you will almost certainly need to trespass from time to time.
If you really struggle to get your bearings, lowering the difficulty under the “Exploration” tab in Playstyle settings will enable you to use a compass and navigation hints.
As you piece together each of the hub worlds into a playable whole, it will become easier to access each part thanks to The Interchange and your map markers. Here are all the unlockable and playable areas in the game so far.
Slatten Dale
The Starting Quarry With Plenty of Challenges
Slatten Dale is the first hub-world you will get to explore in the game, and you will automatically enter this area upon completing the intro. The area is bigger than it first seems, with several key points of interest located here.
For a start, Slatten Dale acts as your main pathway towards Wyndham Village, which acts as a central connecting hub for various other locations. Additionally, there is also an Interchange entrance in the north-east, which similarly allows you to access important new areas.
Other notable locations to explore include Molly Jowett’s trader camp in the North, as well as the Slate Mine Caves, in which you can get more information regarding the Interchange entrance.
The Outlaw camp is also well worth visiting once you’ve got some higher-tier weapons, as you’ll find some good loot items here but will also be met with heavy resistance. On top of that, you can find a shortcut to Casterfell Woods by entering the Sewer Tunnels in the north-west.
Overall, Slatten Dale is one of the safer places to gather resources and equipment, with the main enemy type in the region being Outlaws.
Wyndham Village
A Tranquil Respite From The Horrors of The Quarantine Zone
Wyndham Village is the most peaceful area in the game, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s safe. You can first access it via the pathways in Slatten Dale or through the Interchange, but approaching the gates directly is the safer option.
To find the entrance, simply head to the opposite end of Slatten Dale to the starting tunnel, near the Railyard north of the Water Wheels. Once inside the Wyndham Village area, you will notice that the village contains several key buildings, such as the Church and Town Hall.
Each of the accessible buildings will have a quest associated with it, but the village itself also acts as a central connecting hub for Slatten Dale, Casterfell Woods, and Skethermoor.
Additionally, there is also an Interchange entrance behind the Church, but it is usually guarded, and you will be attacked for trespassing if caught.
Overall, the village functions as an area of respite where you can roam without fear of being attacked, so long as you haven’t angered the Protocol soldiers, that is.
Casterfell Woods
A Wild and Dangerous Forest Filled With Fanatical Cultists
The Casterfell Woods can be pretty treacherous with plenty of enemies and natural obstacles to look out for. In addition to being swarmed by Outlaws and Druids, you will also find Ferals and beehives scattered throughout.
There are two main ways to get into Casterfell Woods. The first is to enter via the Sewer Tunnels in Slatten Dale, but this approach will require you to fight off some enemies and acquire the Sewer Key.
Alternatively, you can head to Wyndham Village, then follow the path down to the coastline and turn left. Following the path along the coast, this will then provide a peaceful route to access Casterfell Woods.
The Woods are an important location as they are home to both Mother Jago and the pagan Druid faction. Speaking with Mother Jago will allow you to learn the Special Tonic recipe and protect against Infected damage, which is crucial to exploring the Medical facility and other areas in The Interchange.
The Stone Circle, Casterfell Dam, and Castle Ruins are all key locations to explore within the area. Casterfell Woods is also the best location in the game for farming both Herbs and Spores, which grow in abundance throughout the region.
Skethermoor
A Highly Policed Area Where Each Step Requires Permission
Skethermoor is an interesting and slightly different area compared with the other overground regions in the game. More than half the area is locked down as a camp for the Protocol faction, and trespassing without permission will lead them to attack you on sight.
To access Skethermoor, you can either head South East through Wyndham Village or head through the Slate Mine Caves in Slatten Dale.
In order to gain permission to enter the camp, speak with Captain Sims in Wyndham Village’s Town Hall building, then report the murder in the church to gain his trust and a Protocol pass.
Additionally, there are some interesting side quests scattered around the unrestricted areas, such as the Brinsop Manor cellar labyrinth.
The Interchange
A Grand Underground Scientific Facility Made Up of Several Parts
The Interchange is a large underground network of facilities and tunnels which connects each of the overground areas to one another. Unlocking and restoring power to each area of the Interchange is the primary goal in the game as this will allow you to reach Oberon and decide what to do with it.
You can access the Interchange through large yellow doors in each of the overground areas. The locations of each door are as follows:
Slatten Dale: In the North-East near the Wyndham Village entrance.
Wyndham Village: Slightly East of St Katherine’s Church
Skethermoor: In the center of the Protocol Camp.
Casterfell Woods: Directly to the West of the Wyndham Village entrance.
Once you’ve gotten inside through one of the entrances, you’ll have to open up both the Medical and Robotics areas. In order to access these facilities, you will need to power up the four Data Stores: Alpha, Bravo, Charlie and Delta.
To access the Medical area, you will need to power up either Alpha or Charlie, while accessing the Robotics facility will require you to power up either Bravo or Delta.
Charlie and Delta can be accessed via the Slatten Dale entrance, while Alpha can be accessed via Wyndham Village or Casterfell Woods. Data Store Bravo can only be accessed through the Skethermoor entrance. However, it is up to you which order you want power up each one.
Each Data Store will require an Atomic Battery to be inserted into the mainframe, subsequently unlocking doors and providing access deeper into the facility.
Once all Data Stores have been powered up, you will need to connect them to the Central Processor using a Signal Redirector. Once all the signals have been directed to the Central Processor, you can proceed to the Windscale Plant where the Oberon Dig Site is located.
Windscale Plant
Where It All Began and Where It All Ends
The Windscale Plant is the goal we are always trying to reach in Atomfall, and the only way to do that is to bring The Interchange back to life. Once all Data Stores are online, you can simply use a Signal Redirector on the panels under the floor in the Central Processing area to open the way to Oberon, which is the Windscale Plant.
There is no overground way to access the plant, and it’s a wise idea to get prepared with plenty of weapons and ammo before venturing there. Entering the plant marks a point of no return, so if you want to complete any side quests or open up any new avenues for potential endings, it is wise to do so before proceeding.
Once inside the facility, you can either take the left or right pathways leading to the Oberon Dig Site. Just be prepared to encounter several Thralls, Ferals and poisonous plants along the way.
The plant seems larger than it really is, but there are still plenty of side passages and rooms to explore along the way. Once you’ve found your way to the Oberon Dig Site, the only thing left to do will be to decide how to deal with the strange supernatural object.
It’s worth remembering the route you took to get to the Oberon Dig Site since, depending on the ending you choose, you might have to make a quick getaway before it all goes to hell.
