In Greek mythology, Hypnos is one of the children of Nyx, and the personification of the concept of sleep. As you’d expect from such a guy, Hypnos appreciates a good siesta, and in the original Hades, he was always sleeping little naps during his job as the House of Hades’ greeter. In Hades 2, however, it seems he’s gotten a little carried away with himself.

Hypnos is one of the NPCs present in the Crossroads from the very beginning of Hades 2, though unlike in the first game, he’s not there to greet you when you return from a run. He’s just off in the corner, sleeping like a baby, and apparently has been sleeping for at least a couple of decades.

Melinoe would love to rouse him from his slumber, but to actually do that, you’re going to have to get into one of the game’s most long-term meta-progression side quests. He wants to keep sleeping that badly.

Spoilers for Hades 2 ahead!

The Short Version

The process of waking Hypnos isn’t especially complicated, it just takes a long time. Like, you can’t finish this questline until you’ve actually beaten the game, that’s how long it’s going to take. To actually do it, though, you’ll just need to chat up a few NPCs, procure some reagents, and perform a few particular incantations. We’ll go in-depth in a moment, but if you’re in a hurry, here’s the basic step-by-step:

  1. Give Hypnos at least 2 Nectars and acquire at least one Poppy
  2. Talk to Hypnos until the incantation End of Deepest Slumber unlocks
  3. Perform End of Deepest Slumber (1 Molly, 2 Shaderot, 3 Poppy) to get Dream Vapors
  4. Use Dream Vapors on Hypnos
  5. Talk to Medea in Ephyra until the incantation End of Dearest Slumber unlocks
  6. Perform End of Dearest Slumber (1 Molly, 3 Mandrake, 3 Poppy) to get Dream Vapors
  7. Use Dream Vapors on Hypnos
  8. Talk to Medea in Ephyra again until the incantation End of Dumbest Slumber unlocks
  9. Perform End of Dumbest Slumber (1 Shaderot, 2 Poppy, 1 Soot) to get Dream Vapors
  10. Use Dream Vapors on Hypnos

Unlocking And Performing End To Deepest Slumber

Before we can get to any incantation-ing, we’re first going to need to establish a rapport with Hypnos, such as it is. You’ll need to give him at least 2 bottles of Nectar, which you can obtain by clearing encounters or buying it from the Wretched Broker for 30 bones. Additionally, you’ll need to have obtained at least one Poppy plant. You can find Poppy Seeds in dig spots in Tartarus, then grow them in a dirt plot in the Crossroads.

Once you’ve met the prerequisites, just keep talking to Hypnos between runs until Melinoe remembers an incantation that may be able to wake him. This will unlock End to Deepest Slumber, which you can perform with 1 Molly harvested in Erebus, 2 Shaderot harvested in Tartarus, and 3 Poppy grown from Poppy Seeds.

Performing this incantation will give you the special gift item, Dream Vapors. Just gift it to Hypnos, and Melinoe will be able to enter his mind to try and wake him, though unfortunately, it won’t work.

Unlocking And Performing End To Dearest Slumber

If basic Dream Vapors aren’t enough to wake Hypnos, we’re going to need something a little stronger. This calls for an expert on weird magic: Medea, the Witch of Shadows. Head up to the City of Ephyra on the surface and look for a conversation room to find Medea. You might need to talk to her a few times to get it to trigger, but eventually, she’ll give you an improved recipe for Dream Vapor, plus the incantation to create it.

To perform this incantation, End to Dearest Slumber, you’ll need 1 Molly, 3 Mandrake Root, and 3 Poppy. You already know where to get Molly and Poppy, but for Mandrake Root, you’ll need to dig up Mandrake Seeds in the Rift of Thessaly, then grow them in the Crossroads.

WIth this next incantation, you’ll get the new and improved Dream Vapors. Gift them to Hypnos like before to enter his mind again and get a little closer to the root of the problem. It’s still not deep enough, though.

Unlocking And Performing End To Dumbest Slumber

If we want to wake up Hypnos, we’re going to need to go full Inception here, and that means brewing up the strongest batch of Dream Vapors imaginable. Once again, you’ll need to consult with Medea to get the strongest recipe possible. With enough chats, she’ll give you the final incantation, the aptly-named End to Dumbest Slumber.

The final incantation requires 1 Shaderot, 2 Poppy, and 1 Soot. Shaderot and Poppy Seeds are readily available in Tartarus, but the Soot is where things get complicated. The only way to get Soot is to receive it from Hades himself, but he won’t be in a very giving mood while Chronos is still in charge. As such, you’ll need to beat the game and see the credits roll before he’ll be willing to give you some. You’ll need to reach Tartarus in an Underworld run and find him, and assuming there’s nothing more pressing he needs to talk about, Melinoe will request some Soot.

With the ingredients in hand, you can perform End to Dumbest Slumber and receive the final, spiciest batch of Dream Vapors. Gift this last one to Hypnos, and after a bit of psychological digging, you’ll finally rouse the skinny dude from his endless slumber.
