If there’s anything I know about the Greek pantheon, it’s that all of its gods are incredibly flighty and fickle, always looking for excuses to one-up each other. Of course, you don’t get to be a lineage of all-powerful deities without learning to compromise, at least sometimes, and in Hades 2, circumstances in the war against Chronos have long-since reached the point where compromise is all but required.
Like in the original Hades, when Melinoe has accrued certain specific Boons from certain specific Olympians, the next time she takes a Boon from one of them, they may appear in a joint message and offer her a Duo Boon. Duo Boons are special Boons that either synergize the trademark effects of both Olympians’ Boons, or provide something wholly unique based on their respective motifs. Not all of these Duo Boons are objectively perfect, not unlike the Olympians themselves, but if you happen to meet the requirements for these in particular and they match your playstyle, they’ll definitely help you on your way.
10 Chain Reaction
It’s All In The Timing
The central concept of Hephaestus’s offensive Boons is the powerful hammer strike that deploys when they’re ready. This strike takes time to recharge, though, so you can only use it after a lengthy weight. Clearly, what the forge god needs is a little extra fire in his belly from Hestia, goddess of the hearth.
Chain Reaction is a Duo Boon from Hephaestus and Hestia that adds a special effect to the former’s blast effects. With this Duo Boon, if you use an attack with a blast effect within 2 seconds of it recharging, it’s guaranteed to fire off twice. Two blasts back to back adds up to some serious damage, especially if you’ve got other Boons dialing down their recharge time. Just remember to keep an eye on the blast Boon’s icon on your left bar so you know exactly when you’re locked and loaded, and to fire it off before you lose your window. It might take a bit of micromanaging, though if you’re going for a rushdown offense approach, you’ll probably be attacking so much that it’ll just happen on its own.
9 Ripple Effect
Like Fighting On A Fault Line
Here’s a fun science fact: seaquakes and tsunamis are often the result of seismic activity occurring around underwater fault lines. Tectonic plates rub together, and the vibrations get the oceans all riled up. Now, imagine if you could freely wield that kind of raw natural strength with no fear for your personal well being.
The Ripple Effect Duo Boon from Hera and Poseidon adds a bonus chance for both Hera’s Fine Line effects and Poseidon’s Ocean Swell effects to fire off twice. Fine Line and Ocean Swell are already excellent AoE offensive boons, moreso if they’re firing off from your Omega Moves simultaneously. Having a chance for both of them to fire off again, and at no extra cost to your Magick, is an objectively excellent upgrade to have in your arsenal. Yeah, you’ll need both basic Boons to pick this one up, which means you’ll have to plan around your Magick costs increasing in general, but it’s a worthwhile investment to make if you plan for it from the start of the run.
8 Beach Ball
Catch This
Have you ever been suddenly pelted in the face with an inflatable beach ball while at the beach or pool? It’s really alarming, even if it doesn’t hurt that much, and if you’re lounging in a chair or floaty, you’ll definitely fall over. Now imagine said beach ball is made of a solid mass of roiling seawater.
The Beach Ball Duo Boon from Poseidon and Apollo manifests a large sphere of water behind you when you start sprinting. When you stop, the ball lurches ahead and explodes on the first enemy it touches, dealing hefty blast damage. The ball moves a little slowly, and it takes a bit of finesse to time and aim your sprint, but once you have it down, it’s a high-damage attack that you can perform with next-to-no limitations. It doesn’t cost any health or Magick, and it reloads very quickly. You’re probably already sprinting around arenas like a caffeinated jackrabbit anyway, so you might as well add a little offensive utility into the mix! Just remember, you have to come to a complete stop to fire the ball.
7 Arterial Spray
Chumming The Waters
Since the very first time a dude set foot in a boat, mankind has engaged in naval warfare. It’s almost as normal as sailing the ocean for fun or commerce, mildly dark as it is to think about. Still Poseidon doesn’t care who fights on his waters, and Ares loves it, so what’s there to complain about.
Arterial Spray is a Duo Boon from Poseidon and Ares that applies to any of Poseidon’s Boons which generate a splash of water. This includes Wave Strike and Wave Flourish. With this Duo Boon equipped, all splash effects have a small, yet hearty chance to strike any enemies they hit twice. Two hits for the price of one, and in a wide area if you’ve got any supplemental Boons that increase the size of Poseidon’s waves. Also, when activated, this Duo Boon turns your waves the same shade of deep red as the River Styx. The color doesn’t affect anything tangible, it just looks really cool. Zagreus would probably really like this Boon if he had it.
6 Cherished Heirloom
Sentimental And Practical Value
Keepsakes are one of your most vital resources in Hades 2, not only providing special abilities and healthy bonuses to keep you going between regions, but steadily growing in strength as you use them. Normally, clearing encounters with Keepsakes equipped is the only way to make them stronger, but there is another way to power them up, at least temporarily.
The Duo Boon Cherished Heirloom from Hera and Demeter increases the rank of your currently-equipped Keepsake, and provides the same boost to any other Keepsakes you equip for the remainder of the run. Rank 1 Keepsakes become Rank 2, Rank 2 becomes Rank 3, and so on. Improved abilities, extra health, Magick, and Death Defiances, and more will help to carry you a little bit further than normal, so long as you remember to equip them. There’s only two things you need to know here: first, this Duo Boon will only provide bonus ranks if it is able. Some Keepsakes, like the Aromatic Phial from Narcissus, cannot be upgraded by Cherished Heirloom. Additionally, this boost only lasts for the run. When the run ends, it’s back to whatever rank it originally was.
5 King’s Ransom/Queen’s Ransom
“He/She Took Everything!”
Zeus and Hera are the King and Queen of the Olympians, a true godly power couple. However, their marriage is also notoriously dysfunctional. Seriously, look up what happened with Heracles, it is not as wholesome as the Disney movie made it look. I guess it makes a sort of thematic sense, then, that both of them would have Boons that spite the other.
King’s Ransom and Queen’s Ransom are opposing Duo Boons from Zeus and Hera with the same general requirements. If you obtain King’s Ransom, you lose any Hera Boons you have, while your Zeus Boons all gain four levels. Queen’s Ransom has the opposite effect, sacrificing Zeus Boons to power up Hera Boons. The ideal Duo Boon to take depends on who’s carrying your run; if you’ve got only a couple of Hera Boons and a lot of Zeus action, it makes sense to burn them and power up Zeus’s Boons and vice versa. Both of these Duo Boons can be helpful in the right circumstances, though if you had to choose one or the other, I’d go with King’s Ransom, just because Zeus’s Boons have more flat damage potential.
4 Warm Breeze
Like A Crisp Spring Morning
Have you ever stepped outside in the middle of a crisp spring morning, felt the sun on your face and a soft breeze in the air? It’s one of those little pleasures in life that nobody can take away from you, a tiny perk that not even the worst day can diminish. You can thank Apollo and Hestia for that one.
Warm Breeze is a Duo Boon from Apollo and Hestia that works in tandem with the Dodge buff and Daze debuff. Whenever you successfully trigger either, the former on yourself and the latter on enemies, you’ll instantly restore 10 health. Considering a large chunk of Apollo’s Boons automatically inflict Daze on nearby enemies, that’s basically a free heal. A small heal, yes, but small heals add up over time. That’s especially true if you’ve got increased Dodge chance, whether from Echo’s Evade Evade Evade buff, having Gale with you, or having certain Boons like Hermes’ Hasty Retreat or Hestia’s Hot Pot. If you get health back from every successful Dodge and Daze, you’ll be able to bounce back from even the most dire situations, so long as you don’t accidentally get yourself steamrolled.
3 Island Getaway
Everybody Gather ‘Round
I’m not really a fan of beach trips, if I’m being completely honest. There are always too many people, and it’s way too loud and cramped. If you consider yourself a social butterfly, though, I guess I could see the appeal. I could also see the appeal if everyone at the beach is your enemy and being close to you makes them tangible weaker.
Island Getaway is a Duo Boon from Aphrodite and Poseidon with two effects. First, you have increased damage resistance against attacks from enemies in your immediate proximity. Second, any of Aphrodite’s Boons that are normally triggered when an enemy is close to you are instead triggered across the entire room. No matter how near or far a foe is relative to Melinoe, the Boons will act as though you’re right next to them and provide their beneficial effects. Aphrodite’s Boons like Glamour Gain and Flutter Strike give you more fighting strength and survivability in exchange for forcing you to be in the thick of things. With this Duo Boon, that shortcoming is completely removed, and you’ll do your best work from absolutely anywhere in every room.
2 Heinous Affront
It’s Payback Time
Remember how I said Olympians are flighty and fickle? Well, they’re also incredibly petty. You could fill an entire library with all the stories of the times a mortal made some innocuous mistake and an Olympian ruined their life for it. Disproportionate retribution is pretty much a family tradition, and this apparently applies to combat scenarios as well.
Heinous Affront is a Duo Boon from Ares and Zeus that triggers whenever one of your Boons from Ares inflicts the Wounds status effect on an enemy. When an enemy has Wounds, any other Boons you have that normally only activate when you take damage will also automatically trigger at no cost to your health. This includes Boons like Apollo’s Light Smite, Zeus’s Divine Vengeance, or Ares’ Visceral Impact. The only catch here is that there’s a 6-second per-enemy cooldown, so you can’t just let them wail on you and destroy themselves. That aside, those self-damage Boons usually do some hefty damage, so getting to trigger them for free will make your DPS skyrocket.
1 Fourth Degree
Gonna Need Some Ointment For That One
Fire is the original equalizer, the foremost force of nature and one of humankind’s first weapons of war. It makes a degree of sense that Hestia and Ares would get along decently, given their mutual investments in fire, and when they’re working in tandem, the fire’s intensity only increases.
Fourth Degree is a Duo Boon from Hestia and Ares that specifically applies to any of Hestia’s Boons that launch fireballs, such as Controlled Burn and Glowing Coal. With this Duo Boon, not only do Hestia’s fireball deal much more baseline damage, but any enemy caught up in one is also afflicted with the Wounds status, which increases the damage they take from all of Melinoe’s attacks for as long as it lasts. Hestia’s fireballs work best as an appetizer, a little something you chuck in an enemy’s face before rushing in to smack them upside the head. With this Duo Boon, those fireballs not only deal exponentially more damage, but the ensuing beatdown will be even more brutal than usual. Since Glowing Coal in particular also generates a Cast field from the fireball, your enemies will take even more damage from your follow-ups while they’re ensnared, provided you have the right Arcana activated.
