Square Enix has held a poll to determine which is the most memorable character from Chrono Trigger, the company’s 16-bit masterpiece, with fans lining up to crown one hero as the best in the game.
Chrono Trigger is a JRPG on the SNES that is often hailed as the greatest game of all time. The story spans time and space, with a mismatched crew of weirdos teaming up to stop the end of the world. An alien being called Lavos is going to destroy the planet in the year 1999, so the Chrono Trigger crew has to travel through time to find a way to stop it.

2025 marks the 30th anniversary of Chrono Trigger, and to celebrate, Square Enix held a poll to determine the most memorable character in the game, from both the heroes and villains. According to Famitsu, the top spot was taken by Frog, the knight who was turned into a humanoid frog.

While not the protagonist of Chrono Trigger, Frog is a huge fan favorite. His story of revenge for his fallen friend and his quest to become worthy of the Masamune blade is among the best in Chrono Trigger, all helped by his amazing theme song.
Here’s the entire top ten list for the most memorable character in Chrono Trigger, as voted for by Japanese fans:
- 10th – Dalton
- 9th – Schala
- 8th – Nu
- 7th – Marle
- 6th – Ayla
- 5th – Lucca
- 4th – Magus
- 3rd – Robo

Unsurprisingly, the top seven spots were all taken by party members, though it’s surprising to see all the ladies near the bottom of the top ten. Turns out they’re just not as popular as an evil wizard, a robot, a guy who never talks, and a giant frog with a sword.
