Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has sold more than 5 million copies to date, and now it’s also one of the most-played Xbox Game Pass games of 2025. In a post on Xbox Wire Wednesday, Microsoft said Expedition 33 “is the biggest new third-party game launch” on its subscription service this year. That’s according to how many players checked the game out within its first 30 days on the service, though the announcement doesn’t provide a specific number of players.
Expedition 33‘s success on Game Pass exemplifies a key allure of the service: being able to check out games that you might otherwise have overlooked. “The turn-based RPG genre has a lot of fans but sometimes it might put people who prefer more real-time action games off, but Game Pass lowered that barrier of entry,” Sandfall Interactive creative director Guillaume Broche said in the announcement. “So a lot of curious players could start the game, explore Lumière and the early game, and realize there’s a lot to enjoy here, even if they weren’t expecting it at first.”
Don’t expect Expedition 33‘s popularity, on Game Pass or otherwise, to die down just yet. It has already started racking up awards, winning big at the Golden Joystick Awards in November. Expedition 33 has received 12 nominations at next week’s The Game Awards, a record amount, and helped set a new mark for indie games at the awards show.
A free update is also on the way in the near future, bringing new environments, enemies, and challenging boss fights to Expedition 33. “I think fans will enjoy having these new moments with their beloved characters,” Sandfall COO and producer Francois Meurisse told Polygon, back when the update was announced.
Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is available now on PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
