Where Winds Meet: Best Strategic Sword Melee DPS Build

When you first enter the world of Where Winds Meet, it can feel rather overwhelming. There are so many places to go, quests to complete, and weapons to train with that it might seem like an overload of information. I know I certainly struggled in the first couple of days.

However, once you get over that first hurdle, the experience vastly improves. And one of the biggest hurdles is simply understanding how combat works and which Martial Arts to use. I’m here to make that decision a little easier.

Where Winds Meet: How to Find and Use All Currencies

Enough money to make your head spin!

I’ve tried a good amount of Martial Arts, and have settled on the Strategic Sword as one of the highest DPS abilities, while having a pretty fun and engaging moveset. Is it technically the highest DPS? Perhaps not, but it’s certainly competitive, and enjoying what weapon you’re using is often better than grinding out tasks with annoying and overcomplicated tools.

Let’s get into this build guide and see everything that makes our Young Wanderer tick.

Martial Arts

Where to Obtain the Arts

So before we get into the nitty-gritty of it all, firstly, you’re going to want to choose 2 Martial Arts to base your build around. As you might have guessed from the title, Strategic Sword is a pretty incredible one to get started with, and one that will almost certainly carry you through the whole game, given the right upgrades.

The other Martial Art you will want to try is also part of the Bellstrike – Umbra set: The Heavenquaker Spear. The Umbra Arts are fantastic at dealing high bleed damage through quick hits and high mobility. What’s more, these are pretty easy to use, as a lot of damage will end up being through bleed and poison.

Both of these are found in Dungeons around the map, and you’ll need a Dragon Key to open up the rocks that block the dungeons.

  • Strategic Sword can be found in Qinghe, southeast of the Back Mountain Boundary Stone.
  • Heavenquaker Sear can also be found in Qinghe, located just east of Wildmane Ranch in the northeast region.

Sneak through these dungeons, taking out the Disciples as you go and partake in the Gold-Ring minigame to learn the Art for yourself.

Art Moveset – Sword

Now, you’re primarily going to be using Strategic Sword for the majority of your combat. Foremost, you’ll begin with your Martial Art Skill (LT+X), spinning around and quickly slashing to inflict Bleed.

Then you can use your Special Skill (LT+Y) to jump backwards and create a crosshatch effect in front of you. If the enemy has 5 stacks of bleed, which they should have from your previous attack, the stacks will be cleared, and you’ll do a good chunk of damage.

While waiting for these to recharge, you can use basic attacks or your charged attack to dash through multiple enemies at once. However, if you want to improve your damage, this is where it gets a little more complicated.

Art Moveset – Spear

Use your Dual-Weapon Skill (LT+A) to switch to your spear. The spear’s Martial Art Skill gives you stacks based on how many times the attack hits. This long sweep can hit multiple enemies around you, so best used in a crowd. Getting more than 10 hits will give a buff called River Flow, increasing HP damage dealt by 20%.

At this point, you can either use the special skill, which is upgraded by your current buff, or switch back to your Strategic Sword and cycle through your abilities using the buff’s bonuses. It sounds complicated on paper, but when you get into the rhythm, it becomes far easier to perform.

Of course, if you’re feeling lazy, feel free just to use the sword. The damage is still great.

Upgrades and Levels

Now, if you haven’t upgraded your Martial Arts, you’re not going to be doing a lot of damage, so this is a must.

If you’re struggling with figuring out how to level up your Solo Mode levels, check out our guide below.

Where Winds Meet: Lone Wanderer or Shared Journey (Solo or Multiplayer)

Why not both?

At first, upgrading these are as simple as spending the regular currency, but soon you’ll need to use certain development materials to upgrade your Martial Arts Skills, like Bluestone Locks. Every time you need a new material, hover over it and select the More option. This game will tell you exactly where you can obtain this new item.

Oftentimes, they can simply be bought from a merchant around the in-game world, but sometimes you can also find these upgrade items in the Seasonal shop, which uses Jade Fish as currency. In addition, killing bosses or clearing outposts and claiming the reward using energy is a great way to get more materials and weapons.

Finding Your Gear

Weapons

And speaking of weapons, this bit is a pretty crucial one. Here you’re going to be using Longswords and Spears that align with your Martial Art Skill. But just which ones to use?

Well, that’s going to depend on what Solo Mode level you are. For example, right now, I’m level 60, which means the best option for me is the Tier 56 Rhapsody Long Sword, which is part of the Hawkwing Set. Likewise, you’ll want to get yourself a Rhapsody Spear too, also part of the Hawkwing set.

Equip both a Rhapsody Ring and a Rhapsody Pendant, and you’ll have 4 pieces of gear which all fit into the Hawkwing set. Having 4 matching pieces will give you a buff. In this case, when we trigger an affinity, like bleed, we get the Hawkwing buff, giving us an extra 10% Physical Attack.

Once you find a good Epic version of these gear pieces, make sure you Tune them to increase your attack power, and then Attune them for perfection.

I found that the best way to get these pieces is by killing the HeartSeeker boss in the Wandering Paths Menu. This will give you 2 pieces of Hawkwing gear, or 6 if you Triple Claim it! Another great way is by going to the Season Shop and scrolling down to the Gear Chest Menu. Here you’ll find chests according to your level. Select the Hawking Chest for guaranteed loot.

If you need more energy and don’t fancy waiting, get yourself some Pillow Powder to rejuvenate yourself.

Armour

The Armour you get from farming this Hawkwing gear is also superb for us. This is the Eaglerise set, which you should fully complete simply by looking for the Hawkwing Weapons.

Having all 4 pieces of the Eaglerise set is going to give us a big defence boost and a special buff which massively reduces incoming damage from regular enemies and bosses. Just like your weapons, make sure you Tune these for extra effects and bonuses.

Extra Upgrades

In terms of extra DPS boosts, look further down the Gear page to find the Enhance section. Here, you can use development materials to upgrade the Minimum and Maximum Physical Attack of your gear, and the HP / defensive bonuses of your armour. You’re going to need a lot of materials, like Raw Ore and Oscillating Jade, to max these out.

In addition, once you reach Solo Mode Level 7, you can specialise in a DivineCraft. You can unlock this through the Qinghe Oddities Merchant. Check out our guide below for more details on that.

Seen a sparkle? Time to hunt!

Don’t forget to use your Talent Points for extra character upgrades, Mystic Skill slots and buffs to your attack skills.

I choose to use the Poison Divinecraft as it pairs quite nicely with our DOT bleed abilities. You’ll need Toxic Essence to upgrade this, which can be found by harvesting Mushrooms, Lethal Crystals and Vicious Flowers around the map. Add the Toxic Powder to your weapon to Imbue it, making all your attacks deal extra poison damage.

Inner Way

Morale Chant

I know that was a lot of info, I know, but trust me, we’re almost there. There are 2 Inner Ways that really allow this build to come together: Morale Chant and Sword Horizon.

Morale Chant gives you an 80% chance to gain a Yi River stack upon dealing damage. This gives you 2 Physical Penetration and can stack up to 5 times. Seeing as though we attack so fast, it’s easy to gain 5 stacks and get that 10 Penetration buff pretty much constantly.

You can buy 10 Notes to unlock this buff simply by speaking to Tian Bao next to the Blessful Retreat Boundary Stone. Spend 5000 Echo Jade to buy every note from him. You can then go to the Harborlink crossing Boundary Stone and speak to Tang Lun to boost Morale Chant even further.

Sword Horizon

This next Inner Way is going to extend our Strategic Sword Moveset, making it a lot more formidable in combat.

By timing your button press correctly (or just mashing it… that works for me), this will cause your Martial Art Skill and Special Skill to add an extra attack to the end of the sequence.

The Martial Skill will perform an additional slash, while the Special Skill will cause you to dash forward after the backwards leap. This will also imbue your Charged Attack with the crosshatch effect. Long story short, this means more mobility and more damage. What’s not to love?

You can purchase this in the Ghost Market, shown above, found either by completing the Bounty Trouble Quest or by heading to the Coffin Shop in the Southeast of Kaifeng City. Just west of the Meow Meow puzzle, there is a bookshop, where you can buy Unknown Old Books. Purchase every single one, and that will give you enough experience to comprehend the Inner Way.

Extra Inner Way Slots

For the other slots, you can really choose whatever speaks to you. Personally, I went for Adaptive Steel and Envigorated Warrior because they’re really simple.

Adaptive Steel applies more bleed to your enemies, which means it’s easier to proc the blood explosion effect from your Sword’s Special Skill. While Invigorated Warrior simply gives you a flat 5% increase to your Damage and Healing. There are a massive number of Inner Ways to choose from, though, so you should pick whichever suits your playstyle best.

Mystic Skills

Finally, we have the Mystic Skills. Again, this is something that you can fine-tune yourself. In reality, you might not actually use these that often in battle, but they’re great when you’re waiting for your main arts to recharge.

Personally, I use Tai Chi a good amount to get rid of enemies that use shields (and for throwing bears, of course). Meridian Touch can also be good to immobilise an annoying enemy.

In addition, Dragon’s Breath is great when there’s a good number of enemies in a 180-degree arc in front of you, while Leaping Toad is even better for single targets and for extending your poison damage from your Divinecraft even further.

Similar to the Inner Ways, there’s a massive number of Mystic Skills, and most of them are viable. You can even upgrade each one to increase its attack power, so go and experiment to see which one you enjoy most!
