I, erm, write about the Steam Deck a lot, and keen eyed readers may have spotted a recurring theme among the accompanying photographs: a lurking Ugreen logo. That’s the Ugreen 9-in-1 Steam Deck Dock, aND what it lacks in sexy naming, it makes up for by being just the nicest little stand/port extender combo that a handheld PC could ask for. It’s also a mere £36/$40 on Black Friday, up to a third off its usual price.
My cupboard’s full of portable PC docks, all of them having joined the accessory gold rush that immediately followed the spread of the Deck and its Windows-based rivals. I always go back to Ugreen’s, though. It’s loaded with extra connectivity and the stand arm is adjustable, which helps docked devices find a comfortable angle on cramped desks. Yes, fine, like mine. It’ll sturdily hold both the standard Deck and the Steam Deck OLED, but is flexible enough to accommodate the likes of the Asus ROG Ally family and Lenovo Legion Go S as well.
Why, though, should you even both with a docking station for a machine that’s design to unleash your games from the tyranny of cables? Because sometimes, a spot of setup twiddling or installation sorcery must be committed, usually in SteamOS’s Desktop Mode, and having the screen upright with a mouse and keyboard attached is almost always the best way to do it. I also anticipate that a good dock’s usefulness when taking illustrative photos for a moderately successful PC gaming website will see them find an audience of billions, if they haven’t already.
