Nvidia’s reveal of its fancy new DLSS 5 technology is absolutely not going as planned. The AI company wanted to position the graphical upgrade as a progenitor for the next generation of realistic video games. Instead, the internet has been filling up with memes that poke fun at the uncanny “enhancements” behind DLSS 5.
Now, Nvidia is in full-on damage control mode.
DLSS 5 is a technology exclusive to Nvidia’s RTX 50-series computer chips. The tech uses machine learning and real-time neural rendering that is supposed to “infuse pixels with photoreal lighting and materials.” Rather than be impressed, though, the public is flabbergasted. Though it is not technically a filter, onlookers keep likening DLSS 5 to beauty filters on social media apps like TikTok and Snapchat. The public is fixated on the fact that DLSS 5 versions of Resident Evil Requiem characters like Grace and Leon make the characters look like entirely different people. Despite Nvidia claiming that DLSS 5 does not actually alter textures or geometry — and though the tech genuinely improves non-human environmental elements — gamers remain unconvinced.
No wonder, then, that Nvidia has found itself clarifying what DLSS 5 is “supposed” to be in the comments of its DLSS YouTube trailer. In response to gamers calling DLSS 5 “AI slop” that violates artistic integrity, Nvidia insists that “game developers have full, detailed artistic control over DLSS 5’s effects to ensure they maintain their game’s unique aesthetic.”
But even if Leon S. Kennedy was always meant to look like a generic pretty boy hallucinated by OpenAI’s Sora, the reputational damage is already done. Most of what you’ll find on DLSS 5 on the internet are jokes. Good thing, too. If Nvidia is previewing the yassified nightmare we can expect from all major games in the future, then we could all use a laugh right now.
Though Nvidia has the support of major studios like Bethesda and Capcom, some game developers are riffing on the AI snafu as well.
