10 Spy Games to Play if You Like 007 First Light

Do you enjoy a good spy thriller? Do you want to sneak around, avoid enemy detection, and assassinate the target without getting caught? Well, 007 First Light captures exactly what you may want from a spy thriller. Unfortunately, this game can’t last forever.

If you have already completed First Light, you are probably looking for something else to capture your attention in the same way that 007 does. Luckily, there are numerous spy games out there with similar gameplay mechanics that can scratch that spy thriller itch.

10 Games That Make You Feel Like John Wick

Become who you send to kill the boogeyman.

From sneaking into enemy lairs, sweet-talking your way into a meeting, and assassinating the bad guy, to using cool gadgets, here are some spy thrillers to play if you like 007 First Light.

10 Thief (2014)

Very Stealthy

The Thief series made a small comeback in 2014 with the release of Thief from Eidos Montréal. This stealth title has you sneaking around a city, stealing items from the rich. While you aren’t exactly playing a spy, the stealth mechanics you would expect from a spy thriller are definitely there.

On top of this, you have various gadgets at your disposal, such as various arrows, a grappling hook, lock picks, and flash bombs. It is sad that this game didn’t spark the resurgence of the Thief series, as it is very underrated.

This game won’t capture the suave nature of being a spy, as you are a loner who stalks the city streets, but it will capture the stealthy side of spywork that comes from sneaking around and avoiding detection.

9 Dishonored

Almost Spy-like

Dishonored is a fan-favorite game created by Bethesda that puts you in the shoes of Corvo Attano. He was the royal protector to the empress, but was framed for her assassination. Throughout the game, you must work to clear your name of this crime, which is something spy thrillers have done throughout the media.

In the game, you become an assassin, and much of the game requests that you complete missions stealthily. Much of the game screams spy thriller without it being labeled as such, making it a good pick for the list.

Along with this, the game gives you plenty of spy-like tools, with you getting pistols, different arrow types for your crossbow, and a mask that seems like something crafted in a spy film.

8 Assassin’s Creed Syndicate

Stealth Assassination

The Assassin’s Creed series has always been about stealth, with most of the games requiring you to avoid detection as you sneak in and assassinate your targets. Syndicate makes the list thanks to its focus on stealth mechanics that sets it above others in the series.

The key item of any assassin in the series is the signature hidden blade, which you can use to stealthily take down opponents without others seeing your actions. This feels like something that would be made in a spy film, as any good spy needs a weapon they can conceal on their person.

To further enhance your arsenal of gadgets, you get items like smoke and voltaic bombs, throwing knives, and darts. Oh, and did I mention that the darts can be hallucinogenic? That is definitely a spy tool.

7 GoldenEye 007

The OG

Perhaps the most well-known spy game of all time, GoldenEye 007 was released on the Nintendo 64 all the way back in 1997. While it is admittedly a bit dated, it has stood the test of time and is still a great experience to this day.

GoldenEye pioneered the spy thriller genre of video game, and while other games may have flashier graphics and better gameplay, this game is still regarded as one of the best of the genre.

One of the main reasons this game is remembered so fondly is because of it being one of the first popular multiplayer shooters for a home console. This game was the first to put you in the shoes of a spy, and every moment of its first-person action felt like you were in a movie.

6 Perfect Dark

The Predecessor

Goldeneye 007 walked so that Perfect Dark could run. Rare astounded everyone with the release of GoldenEye, and then the team brought back the same feel with the release of Perfect Dark.

This game follows a character by the name of Joanna Dark, a rookie agent for the Carrington Institute. Throughout the story, you uncover a conspiracy involving megacorporations, aliens, and a plot to overthrow the U.S. President.

While the game is not a direct sequel to the 007 franchise, it is heavily inspired by the spy thriller, and even uses the same control scheme. Along with this, the general gameplay is the same, making it just as good as GoldenEye.

5 Invisible, Inc

Turn-Based Spy Action

Let’s change things up a bit. Instead of a first-person or third-person shooter, why not try out a spy thriller that is turn-based? Invisible Inc. is what you get when you combine a game like Fire Emblem with 007.

Invisible Inc. is a game where you break into the world’s most dangerous corporations. It is a game that requires stealth, tactics, and precision to complete your objective. A key trait of any spy is their ability to think their way out of a problem, and Invisible Inc. requires you to do just that.

Use gadgets to hide from foes, dodge laser grids, and hack into computer systems. Instead of going head-to-head with enemies, you are trying to sneak in, not get spotted, and complete your objective in this thrilling spy game.

4 Alpha Protocol

Old-School Spy Action

Long ago, in the age of the Xbox 360, there was a game called Alpha Protocol. Released in 2010, this game is one of the more popular spy thrillers on the market, beating out various games in the 007 series and other spy thrillers.

In Alpha Protocol, you play as Michael Thorton, a talented agent tossed aside by the government. It is up to you to use your knowledge and skills to prevent an international catastrophe.

What makes this game more interesting is that you don’t always get rewarded for being friendly. Sometimes, you must lean into espionage and be ruthless.

When infiltration is an option, there’s no better alternative.

Sandbox Stealth

Metal Gear has always been about stealth, but Phantom Pain takes it to a new level. With larger open areas that require you to stealth your way to completing your objective, this game makes everything feel like a puzzle and it is great.

You aren’t required to use stealth. Those who are good enough can brute force their way to the objective, but if you want the true spy experience, you go in with a little finesse and only use brute force when there is no other option.

Thanks to the sandbox nature of this game, you can plan your approach carefully, stop partway through to make additional plans, and continue on with the mission. This gives you a level of control that other games don’t have, making it very worthwhile to play.

2 Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Timing and Precision

Splinter Cell: Blacklist is one of the best spy games ever made. In it, you step into the shoes of Sam Fisher, head of the Fourth Echelon unit. Your mission is to stop a group of terrorists called The Engineers, who are working to convince the U.S. to withdraw its worldwide troops.

Splinter Cell has always been a spy thriller title, but Blacklist goes beyond previous entries in the series with missions that require perfect timing and patience to complete. It is a game that requires you to work under pressure, making you feel the stress of being an agent on the field.

The game also features an array of gadgets, giving you access to items like drones, cameras, and more. This allows you to adapt your playstyle and get more in tune with your inner agent.

Agent 47 is one of the most iconic spies in all the media, whether that be on the big screen or in video games. In 2016, World of Assassination was released, bringing together the best parts of all three Hitman titles for endless replayability.

The Hitman franchise is known for its deep attention to detail, allowing you to perform unique assassinations that only a spy could come up with. You also have various items at your disposal. For instance, you can use gum that has been laced, leave it on a chair, and let your victim pick it up.

Hitman is a game that rewards your ingenuity and makes you think on your feet. If there is a spy thriller that you should try out, it would be Hitman: World of Assassination.
