UPDATE 3: Xbox is off to a flying start because they’ve already have to amend what they said. There will be a PC version on October 6, despite Asha Sharma literally saying it would be an Xbox “console exclusive”. Good job, Xbox.
UPDATE 2: Xbox has announced that not only is Gears of War: D-Day not coming to PlayStation 5 when it launches on October 6, it is also an Xbox CONSOLE exclusive, meaning it isn’t going to be on PC, either.
Kicking off the Xbox Showcase, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma said “As we kick off the show today with Gears of War: E-Day, it’s only fitting that, as we return to Xbox, we return to Gears. So today we are announcing that Gears of War: E-Day will be an Xbox console exclusive.”
UPDATE: The mystery deepens as Gears of War: Reloaded has been rated for PS5 on the official PEGI site.
While this does not mean Xbox hasn’t pulled the plug on the PS5 version, it would indicate how last-second the decision is. Or, Jeff Grubb has it wrong and the Gears of War prequel will be on Sony’s hardware after all.
Original Story:It’s another day, which means it’s time for all of us to be confused once again by Xbox. This time it’s because Gears of War: E-Day, which has been assumed to be coming to PS5, might not be coming to Sony’s machine after all.
That’s according to Jeff Grubb on the Giant Bomb Podcast. As he’s chatting to his podcast pals, Grubb states that Gears of War: E-Day was going to be on PS5, but “it’s not anymore. That just happened. That’s a decision that just got made.”
Based on Grubb’s words, my assumption is that the decision has been made under Asha Sharma’s new leadership. She’s already openly stated that Xbox is reviewing its attitude toward exclusivity, and recently continued to dance around the topic in a recent interview where she admitted that “we’re increasingly becoming a platform. In order to be a platform, you must have exclusive content and services.”
The rest of Sharma’s interview seemed to indicate Xbox is planning on gauging things on a game by game basis going forward rather than a blanket multiplatform policy. But again, it’s frustratingly unclear.
Grubb and his friends had a good laugh too. As Grubb says, “they’re going backwards on this stuff. Like, they were like, this battle doesn’t make any sense, and now they’re like, exclusives to, what, sell another 20 million Xboxes?”
On the other hand, Walmart reckons it’s coming to PlayStation as it put up a placeholder page for the game. However, it has been taken down. Plus. Walmart has done things like before and ended up changing it.
We might get answers at today’s Xbox Showcase where Gears of War: E-Day is going to be shown off in a Direct event straight after the show. But even that might be up in the air because Asha Sharma also recently backtracked on the idea of showing competitor’s logos during official Xbox events. That said, these events are usually filmed weeks and even months in advance, so they probably won’t re-edit today’s event. Maybe. Who the hell knows with Xbox these days.
It’s also worth keeping in mind that Gears of War: E-Day has never actually been confirmed for PS5, making it easier for Xbox to pull a u-turn. It has just been assumed that it launch on PS5 due to Xbox’s switch to being a multiplatform publisher, and because they released Gears of War: Reloaded on PlayStation.
It would be harder for Xbox to backtrack on something like Fable which has been pushed back to 2027, but has been confirmed as launching simultaneously on PlayStation.
