Indie publisher Pixel Doors and London-based developer Beyond The Pixels have launched their retro-inspired shoot-em-up Astro Burn into Early Access on Steam today. The colourful arcade game follows the adventures of Astro, a space cat armed with powerful weapons, as she battles through waves of cute enemies to find her way home.
The launch comes after a particularly successful showcase at the London Games Festival 2026, where Astro Burn was selected as an Official Selection for the New Game Plus event. The game drew large crowds (I know, I was there) and generated significant interest, leading to a surge in Steam wishlists from players who don’t typically enjoy bullet-hell games.

Astro Burn promises to blend chaotic arcade action with accessibility, featuring 10 diverse levels spanning space, mechanical worlds, underwater realms, and cities. Players can stack anime-style power-ups whilst battling screen-filling waves of adorable enemies. The game offers both solo play and local co-op modes, designed to appeal to hardcore shoot-em-up fans whilst remaining welcoming to newcomers.

Game Director HaZ Dulull, a veteran of the film, TV, and games industry, expressed excitement about community involvement during Early Access development. The team aims to use player feedback to refine and shape the final version of what they’re calling their “meowtastic” space adventure.

Astro Burn is available now in Early Access for PC and Mac via Steam.
