EA Sports FC came very close to facing direct competition. Rumors about a possible new soccer game developed by 2K Games had been circulating for some time. However, this project will not see the light of day.

The website Sports Gamers Online (SGO) reported that discussions were at an advanced stage between the publisher and FIFA. Negotiations centered on contract terms, licensing agreements, and future game modes.

2K Games reportedly wanted a 10-year contract and access to the rights to the World Cup and the FIFPRO license. Ultimately, it was FIFA that backed down to pursue “faster and more lucrative opportunities.” That is why the international soccer federation turned to Netflix to develop FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition.
