Xbox Helix Aims for Backward Compatibility with All Xbox Generations

Microsoft's Project Helix could allow players to access games from all previous Xbox generations, promising a potentially massive gaming library.

A major development on the Xbox front emerges from reports about Microsoft’s next console, code-named Project Helix. According to a leaked memo reported by The Verge, the upcoming console may support backward compatibility across every generation of Xbox, including the original Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, and Xbox Series. This move could position Project Helix as having one of the largest game libraries for a home console, particularly as it aims to include both disc and digital formats.

In a related effort to enhance player experience, Destructoid reports that Xbox users are set to receive Platinum Achievements. This feature mirrors PlayStation’s Platinum Trophies, rewarding gamers for fully completing a game’s achievements. Historically, Xbox focused on Gamerscore rather than rare achievements, so this feature is a noteworthy addition for completionists on the platform.

Games Launches and Updates

Several game updates and launches are making waves this week. “Ghost Recon Wildlands” received its ‘Last Rights’ update featuring new world settings and the return of the popular Predator level, as reported by GamesHub. This update provides players with fresh missions and narratives to explore in the enduring Ubisoft title.

The open-world creature-collecting PC title “Palworld” is also expanding its horizons with a new mobile MMORPG adaptation. According to The Verge, this version will retain the original’s crafting and multiplayer components, while promising new narrative elements for mobile gamers later this year.

Technical Issues and Performance

On the less favorable side, “Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls,” out now on multiple platforms, is experiencing significant performance issues on PC. Players report dropped frame rates and general stuttery gameplay, as the game’s developer, Arc System Works, has yet to resolve these bugs despite acknowledging them in earlier beta phases, per Gamespot.

Preservation Efforts in Gaming

In an extraordinary preservation effort, a group of enthusiasts reportedly spent $900 and connected 90 GPUs to revive “Dirge of Cerberus: Lost Episode,” a mobile game spinoff from the “Final Fantasy 7” universe. The game, which had been defunct since 2018, now resurfaces thanks to their dedication, as reported by Kotaku.

Finally, in “Destiny 2,” a modder is working to bring back cut content for the first time in years, allowing players the chance to revisit parts of the game that were previously removed. Details on this modding effort were covered by Kotaku.
