Amazon Game Studios shifts gears, exiting MMOs like 'New World' as it scales back gaming involvement.
In the past few days, Amazon Game Studios has confirmed significant changes in its involvement with the massively multiplayer online (MMO) genre, signaling a broader strategic retreat from this segment of gaming. As reported by both Destructoid and The Verge, the company plans to cease managing several MMOs, including ‘Throne and Liberty’, ‘Lost Ark’, and ‘New World’. These titles will transition to new publishers by early 2027, with studios such as FirstSpark Games and Smilegate taking over responsibilities.
This move comes after Amazon declared last year that it would reduce its emphasis on developing first-party AAA games, particularly MMOs. ‘New World: Aeternum’, one of Amazon’s renowned MMOs, is set to halt new content updates and will officially go offline by January 31, 2027. For current players of ‘Throne and Liberty’ and ‘Lost Ark’, live operations will be transferred by the end of the year, but the core experience is expected to remain the same.
Meanwhile, there seems to be a buzz among ‘The Elder Scrolls’ community, following a cryptic tweet from Xbox chief Asha Sharma. The tweet, which hinted at the potential setting of ‘The Elder Scrolls 6’, has ignited speculation across various fan channels. According to Destructoid, Sharma’s artistic use of asterisks in the title suggests an eight-letter location, setting fan theories abuzz. While this has not been confirmed, it highlights the intense interest and anticipation for any details about the long-awaited sequel.
Other news includes an unfortunate glitch affecting some Steam Deck users. Game Rant reports that a recent system update has rendered some handheld screens non-functional unless connected to an external monitor. Valve’s Steam Deck, released in 2022, continues to receive frequent updates, but this particular issue is causing concern among users.
In more uplifting industry developments, Kinetic Games, known for their hit game ‘Phasmophobia’, is branching out into publishing, according to GameSpot. The studio’s new label will debut with a diverse roster of five games, featuring genres ranging from horror to cozy, indie titles.
Today’s updates represent a shift in dynamics within the gaming market, with one major player stepping back while others expand their horizons. These changes may influence gaming experiences significantly, offering both challenges and new opportunities for developers and gamers alike.
