Nintendo Celebrates 40 Years of Zelda with New Console, Game Remake, and Film

Nintendo marks The Legend of Zelda's anniversary with a themed Switch 2 console, Ocarina of Time remake, and a film.

Nintendo’s celebration of The Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary is gearing up to be a significant event, with several major announcements that are dominating the gaming headlines. At the forefront is the unveiling of a special edition Nintendo Switch 2 console and Pro Controller, both themed around the beloved Zelda franchise. According to MyNintendoNews, these items will be available on 29th October, further cementing Nintendo’s commitment to commemorating their iconic series.

Continuing the festivities, Nintendo has also announced a remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Switch 2, aiming for a release on 5th November. As per MyNintendoNews, this version promises a slew of enhancements, including a “Threads of Time” menu, indicating an evolution from the N64 original. Pre-orders are live, with Nintendo Everything reporting a $10 discount on the physical version, following a trend of digital versions being cheaper.

The visual upgrades of the remake are substantial. Nintendo Life provides a side-by-side comparison video showing just how far the graphics have come from the N64 days, highlighting the technical advancements made for the Switch 2.

In conjunction with these releases, Nintendo is also rolling out a heap of new merchandise. On Nintendo Life, reports indicate that fans can expect new amiibo figures in 2027 featuring Young Link and Young Zelda, showcasing the new art style reflective of the remake. This adds another layer to the company’s marketing push around this cornerstone franchise.

Moreover, the celebration extends beyond video games. Nintendo has announced a film adaptation simply titled The Legend of Zelda, scheduled for a global release on April 30th. According to MyNintendoNews, series creator Shigeru Miyamoto has been significantly involved in the project, although a trailer is not yet available.

Meanwhile, other titles continue to join the expansive catalog of games for the Switch. Rigel Gameworks brings back nostalgia with BioMenace Remastered, releasing on October 8th. As reported by Nintendo Everything, this update of the classic MS-DOS game includes enhanced graphics and new gameplay episodes, potentially attracting both old fans and new players alike.

Lastly, Nintendo Everything shared news from Bandai Namco on Tales of Eternia Remastered, highlighting a new character trailer for Keele Zeibel. While not a headline-grabber like Zelda, it adds to the diversity of remastered content on the Switch, offering players more options.

Overall, Nintendo is not only strengthening its core franchises with these latest announcements but also expanding its reach into other entertainment mediums, making 2026 a landmark year for both Zelda fans and the company itself.
