While the initial fan reaction to the new Skate (we’re calling it that, not skate.) was underwhelming, it certainly didn’t stop people from playing it, as a shocking number of people have played the early access version of the game.
Fans of the Skate franchise had to wait fifteen years for a new entry, with EA seemingly abandoning its more realistic skateboarding franchise. In 2025, the fourth game in the series finally entered early access, with a fully free approach to the game, where the monetization comes from cosmetics.
While there were a lot of complaints about Skate’s approach, it has done little to deter any enthusiasm for the game. The official Skate Twitter/X account has confirmed that over fifteen million players have experienced the early access version of the game since it launched in September 2025.
Skate Has Drawn Millions Of Players Already
Getting fifteen million players into any game at launch is a massive feat, regardless of the franchise it’s attached to. It seems that EA has been underestimating the hunger for flick-controller skateboarding games all of this time.
Naturally, the fact that the early access period (and indeed, the entire game) is free means that a lot of those downloads could have been curiosity clicks. There’s no indication that those players stuck around, or that they spent any money on the game.
Skate players have harshly criticized the game’s monetization, noting that it often forces paid elements into their faces. Many fans of the older Skate titles are annoyed with the aesthetic shift, being more cartoony than before, as well as the always-online breaking their immersion, as players pop in and out of existence.
If the big player numbers stick around and they spend cash on the game, then the issues that fans have likely won’t change too much, as the dollar signs trump all in this industry.
