Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles faithfully recreates the original game, which includes giving some of the most frustrating boss fights in video game history a fresh coat of paint.

The Wiegraf fight in the original Final Fantasy Tactics is one of the most infamous in the series. Not only is it punishingly difficult, but it’s possible to get soft-locked here, if the player happens to save without realizing they can’t leave Riovanes Castle.

Indeed, that happened to me back in the late ‘90s. I went into the Wiegraf fight woefully unprepared, with only a single save file. This meant I couldn’t proceed and had to start the whole game over again from scratch.

So here we are, twenty-five years later, and I’m facing down Wiegraf in crisp HD. Only this time, I come bearing the knowledge of Internet nerds who have discovered the easiest ways to take out this annoying Templar and his even more annoying summon spell.

This article deals with the version of the Wiegraf boss from The Ivalice Chronicles, though most of the same tactics/strategies still work for the original version of the game.

There’s something incredibly important that needs to be said first. The Wiegraf fight might be notorious, but it’s followed directly by another, equally annoying battle. As you can’t leave Riovanes Castle without losing all of your progress, it’s best to prepare for both.

The third Riovanes Castle fight badly needs specific items and builds to complete. So, make sure to check out our guide linked here to read about it, so you can finish the stage in a single go, without needing to do the Wiegraf fight again if Marquis Elmdor and his demon waifus keeps kicking your backside.

The Wiegraf fight happens in two phases. The first phase is a one-on-one fight between Wiegraf and Ramza, while the second phase involves Wiegraf transforming into Belia, the Gigas, and summoning demons, while Ramza’s party comes in as reinforcements.

As Ramza is fighting alone in the first fight, the player needs a specific setup. First, you need a Chameleon Robe! These can be purchased from the Outfitter in a city. This will prevent Wiegraf from using his powerful Holy attacks, diminishing his damage output considerably.

To cheese the fight, have Ramza be a Squire who has learned the Tailwind Mettle power. As a secondary ability, have Martial Arts with Chakra and Aurablast. For the other abilities, learn First Strike and Lifefont from the Monk list, and Dual Wield from the Ninja job. Equip Ramza with the two strongest swords available, equip the Chameleon Robe, and you’re ready to go.

During the solo phase, Wiegraf won’t use his holy attacks, as the cheating AI will know you’re using the Chameleon Robe. Instead, he will use ranged martial arts hits or his sword, both of which are considerably weaker. You’re not going to be facing him head-on. Instead, run away from Wiegraf and use the Tailwind ability each turn to increase your speed.

Each time you move, Lifefont will heal you. If health is running low, use Chakra.

Try to keep your distance from Wiegraf, as you don’t want to kill him straight away. If he attacks with his sword, then you might counter with First Strike and one-shot him with two sword blows. Instead, just keep running away and using Tailwind, maintaining as much distance as possible.

As you keep using Tailwind, you’ll notice that you’re getting more turns than Wiegraf. This will make it easier to keep your distance, heal, and use more Tailwinds. Simply keep using this runaway/Tailwind strategy to boost your speed until you’re getting four or five actions per turn, as seen on the turn list at the side of the screen.

Once you have multiple turns lined up, make sure you’re fully healed, then smack Wiegraf with Aurablasts until he drops to critical. This will kick off the next stage of the fight.

How To Beat Belias, The Gigas

Belias is a brutally hard foe. He spams the Cyclops summon, which deals non-elemental damage and cannot be blocked. He’s also joined by powerful demons with long-range attacks that deal a ton of damage.

Fortunately, the stat boosts from the previous round will remain. Simply have Ramza rush up and whack Belias with double sword attacks. If he somehow survives the onslaught, use your other party members with ranged attacks to whittle him down. Agrias is especially useful here, as her holy sword attacks have a lot of range and deal a ton of damage.

Don’t bother going for the demons: just focus on Belias, as the battle ends when he’s taken down. You should be able to kill him before he fires off a Cyclops. Once he’s done, you can finally move on with the rest of the game, where another difficult boss fight awaits for you to take on.
