Metroid 4 Has Bad News For Open World Fans

Those hoping for a massive open world experience in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond have had their hopes dashed, thanks to a Nintendo update that has downplayed how often Samus will use her motorcycle.

The most recent trailer for Metroid Prime 4: Beyond showed Samus riding around on the Vi-O-La, a motorcycle whose wheels have a similar pattern to her Morph Ball form. The Vi-O-La is shown driving around massive open areas, with Samus still able to shoot down enemies using her arm cannon.

The sight of these big open stages led many fans to believe that Metroid Prime 4: Beyond would be an open world title, or at least had a semi-open world exploration. This has now been clarified by the Japanese Metroid Prime 4: Beyond website, which outlines when it can be used.

Samus’ Bike Can Only Be Used In Certain Locations

Samus won’t be able to have Grand Theft Auto-style joy rides across alien landscapes, as the Nintendo website confirms that the Vi-O-La can only be used in specific locations, and that she’ll have to dismount to continue exploring. The bike is used to enter specific areas, but it’s not something that’s used throughout the whole game.

It looks like the world of Metroid Prime 4: Beyond could have long stretches of land between dungeons, but it’s not a true open world in the sense that players can explore and go looking for secrets or sequence break.

The Vi-O-La is still a cool addition to the series, and it’s definitely the most impressive new tool in Samus’ arsenal in Metroid Prime 4: Beyond. It’s just a shame that its uses will be limited. That being said, it will likely have tons of cool set pieces, and there will almost certainly be a boss that involves fighting from the back of a motorcycle.
