Everyone is weighing in following Sony’s announcement that it will stop producing physical discs in January 2028. While gamers are almost unanimously against Sony, the situation is a bit different among industry professionals.
In a post on X, Marek Tyminski, CEO of CI Games, shared his perspective on the situation. First, he explains that physical editions could become scarce as early as 2027 to pave the way for the transition to digital. Furthermore, while he reaffirms that Lords of the Fallen 2 will be available on disc, he adds that this represents a cost that is “harder to justify.”
Indeed, Tyminski states that physical releases generate “ar less revenue per unit to developers, longer lead times, and unnecessary costs.” In some cases, when physical sales account for less than 20% of total sales, phasing them out could make sense for the companies involved.
