Digital detectives and Lovecraft fans alike are in for a bit of disappointing news as the Ukrainian developer Frogwares has recently announced that their latest title, The Sinking City 2, will be delayed to the first half of 2026.
A sequel to 2019’s cult classic horror action-adventure game, The Sinking City, The Sinking City 2 was first announced in 2024 during the March 2024 Xbox Partner Preview and was slated to release in 2025.
Compared to its predecessor, The Sinking City 2 is leaning more towards becoming a darker, survival horror type game while still adhering to delivering a creepy, Lovecraftian narrative with some optional detective elements.
However, due to challenges derived from the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine, the development studio has been forced to delay The Sinking City 2‘s launch to early 2026.
The Status of The Sinking City 2
In a press release posted on Frogwares’ website and The Sinking City 2‘s Kickstarter page, Frogwares claimed that the war in Ukraine has caused the studio to deal with frequent power outages and to adapt to “unstable and dangerous conditions.”
Instead of rushing to release The Sinking City 2 in this chaotic climate, Frogwares has decided to delay the game’s launch and will use this extra time to polish the game as this title is their first true survival horror game.
The Frogwares team want to ensure that The Sinking City 2 will be “tense, atmospheric, and deeply unsettling in all the right ways” for all of their fans, both new and old.
In the meantime, Frogwares has shared some screenshots of The Sinking City 2‘s alpha state, depicting the early 20th-century city of Arkham being consumed by a supernatural flood and the title’s new, mysterious protagonist exploring its remains on foot and boat.
Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, Frogwares and other Ukrainian-based game developers, such as S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl‘s GSC Game World, have struggled to safely maintain game development and acquire funding, with the former launching a Kickstarter campaign in early 2025 in order to help gain adequate support.
