UK indie developer Foulball Hangover has launched their acclaimed mining sandbox Hydroneer on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S today, marking exactly six years since the game’s original PC release. The console version arrives alongside the Journey to Volcalidus DLC expansion, offering players a comprehensive mining automation experience designed specifically for couch gaming.
Hydroneer starts players with nothing more than a shovel, bucket, and patch of land before gradually evolving into a complex automated operation. Players dig for resources, refine materials, craft items like jewellery and weapons, then sell their creations to fund expansion. The game’s progression system sees manual labour eventually replaced by conveyor belts, pipes, and machinery that handle the heavy lifting whilst players focus on innovation and exploration.

Lead developer Max Hayon explains the studio’s approach differs from typical sandbox engineering games. “We wanted a building game that you didn’t have to work at. You could sit down with friends, add to your factory, watch stuff go haywire, and go back to the drawing board,” he says. The console version includes couch co-op functionality, allowing friends to collaborate on mining operations together.

The Journey to Volcalidus expansion introduces the frozen region of Volcalidus, where players must abandon their previous progress and tackle ice-covered terrain using lava-powered machinery. This expansion features higher-tier crafting options, new vehicles, and a significantly expanded world to explore.

Players can find more information about Hydroneer and connect with the community through Foulball Hangover’s official website at www.foulballhangover.com.
