This rumor isn’t new, but it’s gaining traction given the company’s current situation. The Information has published an article discussing the future of Xbox… and that future could lie far from Microsoft.
Indeed, the restructuring of the gaming division could lead the American giant’s executives to consider spinning off Xbox. This could take the form of a complete separation, the creation of a wholly-owned subsidiary, or the formation of a joint venture with external partners.
This way, Microsoft would insulate itself from potential financial risks at Xbox. Losses would be limited to the subsidiary without affecting the parent company. Legal distinctions would also be in place. Xbox would then have its own contracts, employees, and legal liabilities. Potential debts would not affect Microsoft. LinkedIn and GitHub operate in this manner and would serve as models to follow.
According to The Information, XBOX has decided to accelerate the development of its flagship franchises. Asha Sharma is reportedly placing a strong emphasis on The Elder Scrolls and Fallout, which would become two priority areas. This would also be the case for Halo and Minecraft. What’s more, both Satya Nadella (the Microsoft CEO) and Amy Hood (the Microsoft CFO) have approved a plan to increase investment in high-end games starting July 2026. However, the budget in question is not final and thus subject to change.
