For over 15 years, Missouri punk rock band of brothers Radkey have found themselves on stage at events such as Download Festival, Coachella, and Afropunk Festival. With their new studio album Bedroom Sand, Radkey are looking to continue making their presence known from small stages to arenas. We had a chance to speak with bassist Isaiah about the new album.
MP3s and NPCs: While most artists record their albums at a traditional recording studio, Radkey decided to record the album at Syracuse University. What drew you to wanting to make the record there?
Isaiah Radkey: We needed a place to make the new record and when we got the opportunity to use Syracuse University’s state of the art recording studio, we thought it sounded like a great challenge so we went for it! We had experience producing our last record by ourselves, and that really helped a lot.
MP3s and NPCs: One of my favorite songs on the album is the title track. What does “Bedroom Sand” mean to you?
Isaiah: Thanks! “Bedroom Sand” is also one of our favorite tracks! Bedroom Sand is a made up substance that makes you trip when you use it. I’m hoping to feature it in a music video to get the visual out there. The song is in some ways about self doubt and having a hard time getting things done.
MP3s and NPCs: What artists did you listen to while working on the album?
Isaiah: Squeeze, Foo Fighters, Husker Du, Green Day, Led Zeppelin, Weezer, Leonard Cohen, Billy Joel, and a lot of other ones.
MP3s and NPCs: In the song “Ready To Burn,” you namedrop Pokemon and Pillars of Eternity. Are there any video games that you’ve been playing recently?
Isaiah: Oh yeah. We’re huge into gaming. We’ve been playing Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth, Marvel Rivals, The Outer Worlds 2, Marathon, and Grounded 2.
MP3s and NPCs: A couple years ago, you played shows with Living Colour. What was it like sharing the stage with such an influential band?
Isaiah: It was huge for us! It’s amazing that making music can get you to a place where you get to hang out with rock legends. We ended up playing more shows with them. It was awesome.
MP3s and NPCs: I saw the band perform at Afropunk Festival back in 2012, and 14 years later, you’re still on the grind. Back then, did you even think you’d be sharing the stage with acts like Foo Fighters and Jack White?
Isaiah: That was one of our dreams. When we started the band in our little green jam room in St. Joseph, MO we hoped to share the stage with Foo Fighters and Jack White. It’s still crazy that it happened. Sometimes you think back and you’re like “Damn”.
MP3s and NPCs: Back when the band was starting out, black rock acts were still getting ignored and forced on the sidelines. Now, you have bands like The Paradox and Meet Me @ The Altar getting signed and doing major tours. How do you feel knowing that black rock bands are getting more attention than ever?
Isaiah: We think it’s amazing! It’s awesome to see more black rock bands out there.
Bedroom Sand is available right now here. Radkey’s upcoming tour dates can be seen here.
