NIS America Highlights Concerns Over PS5 Disc Phase-Out

Small publishers voice concerns as Sony plans to end physical media for PS5 by 2028.

While major publishers such as SEGA and Capcom appear indifferent to Sony’s upcoming cessation of physical media production for the PlayStation 5 by 2028, smaller companies are voicing apprehensions. According to Push Square, NIS America, a company well-known for their intricate collector’s editions, has expressed its concern over this shift. The move could significantly impact companies for whom physical media and collectible editions represent a substantial portion of their revenue streams. Although the precise outcomes of this transition remain uncertain, it prompts questions about the future of games that thrive on a physical collector-driven business model.

In other PlayStation news, Activision is gearing up to release an update for Call of Duty: Warzone that will cater to the game’s core audience by allowing players to disable visible cosmetic skins on other players’ avatars, a feature long requested by the community. The possibility to hide “stupid skins” will arrive as part of the Modern Warfare 4 update. Push Square reports this long-waited change aims to address criticism around immersion disruption, particularly from those who feel jarred by the sight of mismatched pop culture icons on the battlefield.

Additionally, the director of Unicorn Overlord has shared details about an ambitious new PS5 RPG project, titled IGNISPHERE, from a collaboration between Good Smile Company and Monochrome Corporation. As reported by Push Square, IGNISPHERE will be a cross-media venture, integrating light novels to expand its narrative universe. This holistic approach reflects a growing trend in gaming where storytelling extends beyond traditional video game formats. The game, titled DAWNGAZER, is slated for a 2028 release, positioning itself as a potentially substantial addition to the PS5 lineup.
