Epic Games Faces Backlash Over “AI-First” Development Mandate

Epic's push for AI-driven game development sparks controversy, contrasting with some developers who reject AI use in creative projects.

Epic Games has reportedly mandated an “AI-first” model for a new Disney-themed shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters, stirring significant controversy in the gaming industry. According to a report by Rock Paper Shotgun, the game, originally set for a March release, has been delayed indefinitely as developers are instructed to utilize AI tools like Anthropic’s Claude for art and code generation. This move aligns with a growing trend of incorporating AI in game development, but also raises concerns about the quality and originality of AI-produced content.

In stark contrast, some developers are pushing back against the use of AI in gaming. Jagex, the studio behind the long-running MMORPG RuneScape, faced backlash over a generative AI usage in a trailer for “Dragon Slayer 2”, prompting the company to pull the trailer and make a public statement that AI “has no place” in their creative endeavors. PCGamesN reports that this comes amid other extensive announcements from the recent RuneFest 2026.

Similarly, developers of “Arc Raiders” are opting for human performances over AI-generated content. The game, which features an underground settlement leader named Celeste, is replacing AI with human actors to enhance the authenticity and emotional depth of its characters, as noted in another PCGamesN article.

Developments in Game Releases

The anticipation for “Valor Mortis”, a first-person soulslike game, is building as the game nears its October 13th launch. According to Rock Paper Shotgun, the title has recently decreased its PC system requirements, making it more accessible and widening its potential audience just before release.

Meanwhile, a notable romhack named “Indigo” offers a fresh twist on a classic gaming experience. Set 15 years after “Majora’s Mask”, this fan-made reinterpretation of “The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time” can now be experienced on PC via static recompilation, a method distinct from AI porting, as explained in another piece from Rock Paper Shotgun.

Indie Game Spotlight

In the indie scene, “runz”, a top-down twin-stick shooter with a focus on strategic ammo usage, has launched a demo that offers a fresh take on the roguelite genre, as noted by GamingOnLinux. Another title, “Brews & Kings”, presents a unique combination of city building and brewing, inviting players to cultivate ingredients and create their own brews, indicating a release is on the horizon.

Lastly, the Victorian-themed comedic point-and-click “Heir of the Dog”, developed by Tall Story Games, prepares for its October 29th release, promising players a pixel art adventure filled with historical humor, also reported by GamingOnLinux.
