What if Super Smash Bros. combat became an entire side-scrolling adventure game? Developed almost entirely by solo dev Moulin aux Bulles Studio, Decline’s Drops recently launched on Nintendo Switch and Xbox after originally releasing on PC (via Steam) back in 2024.
The adventure throws you against mutated creatures, bizarre enemies, giant hydras, strange frogs, angry chickens, and a mysterious organization known as the Eternal Corp. Despite the colorful visuals and playful presentation, there’s also a surprisingly melancholic tone running underneath the whole experience.
Instead of using traditional platformer combat, Decline’s Drops borrows heavily from platform fighters like Super Smash Bros. and Rivals of Aether. Players can use jabs, aerial attacks, smashes, specials, tilts, and combo chains while fighting through side-scrolling stages packed with enemies and bosses.
The combat system also rewards skillful play with ranking grades ranging from D to S, alongside currency called “drops” that you can collect throughout levels. Combined with unique stage design and a full overworld map, the game ends up feeling far more ambitious than you might initially expect from a solo-developed project.
The same developer is also working on Dash’n’Drop, a new title that fuses the precision of platform fighters with the unpredictable progression of a modern roguelite. Currently available as a Steam demo, the game expands upon the core formula that made Decline’s Drops a success.
