When forced to choose between the lesser of two evils, Geralt of Rivia says that he would rather not choose at all. The reality, however, is that Geralt is one of the nicest protagonists in RPG gaming, and often goes out of his way to help others, especially the people he cares about, even at his own detriment.
Being an RPG though, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt allows you to play Geralt as you see fit, even if it goes against his personality or generally clashes with his core values. Occasionally, the game even gives you the chance to do some downright heinous things, which I’ve gone ahead and ranked in order of least to most downright heinous.
As we all mentally prepare for whatever impossible decisions The Witcher 4 throws at us in the future, let’s take a look back at some classics from Wild Hunt.
Potential spoilers for The Witcher 3 below.
8 Taking Emhyr’s Gold
Betraying Ciri’s Trust For A Large Bounty
In the opening act of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Ciri’s biological father, Emhyr var Emreis, offers you a bounty to bring his daughter back to him, seeing Geralt as nothing more than a glorified bounty hunter who doesn’t care about anything but his next payday.
Since Ciri asks to go visit Emhyr anyway, the Emperor of Nilfgaard sees this as you fulfilling your end of the bargain, and offers to pay you for bringing her in. Accepting his money, however, tells Ciri that he only sought her out for the payday.
Not only does this break Ciri’s heart and can affect the game’s ending, but by this point in the story, you should already have plenty of gold and some of the best weapons available, meaning only a truly heartless Geralt would make this decision.
7 Trying To Romance Yennefer And Triss At The Same Time
You Really Thought You Could Have Them Both?
Deciding between romancing Yennefer or Triss in The Witcher 3 is one of the toughest decisions in the game, and one that I’ve personally gone back and forth on over the years. While most players end up going for one or the other based on their personal bias, a truly morally bankrupt Geralt might try to pursue both of them at the same time.
While this leads to an objectively funny ending, it’s done at the expense of making both women feel underappreciated and used by Geralt, and blocks you out of dating both of them. This decision is not only one that makes Geralt seem like a real jerk, but a pretty emotionally undeveloped one too.
6 Forcing Out The Godling
Refusing To Compromise
While in Novigrad, you’ll encounter Corinne Tilly, who has been suffering from nightmares every night since moving into her new home. Upon investigation, Geralt discovers that there is no ghost or evil spirit in the house, but rather a mischievous Godling, a peaceful and even childlike monster that simply got there first.
Though Geralt can choose a peaceful compromise, someone looking to mix their newest playthrough up might instead force the Godling out into the woods. This decision is pretty cruel, but isn’t even close to some of the more heinous choices Geralt can make.
5 Killing The Botchling
A Very Short-Sighted Shortcut
After you meet the Bloody Baron, it will eventually come to light that his wife’s miscarriage has created a Botchling, a twisted fetal monster that attacks the locals, but one that can be turned into a guardian spirit that will also aide Geralt on his quest to find Ciri.
Though Geralt knows full well how to perform the ritual and put the Botchling at rest, it can be a rather tedious, and dangerous, process. A more morally dubious Geralt might choose to skip the ritual altogether and just kill the Botchling. This decision can be seen as short-sighted and rather cruel, denying the baby a place with the family as a guardian spirit and making it harder to track down Ciri.
4 Hanging The Deserter
Letting An Innocent Man Die
An unmarked interaction can be discovered when traveling through Hangman’s Alley. There, Geralt will find a group of locals attempting to hang a Nilfgaardian soldier, who is actually a deserter just trying to get back home to his wife.
By choosing to allow the men to hang him, Geralt is condemning an innocent man to death by a lynch mob. While he may have been a soldier in an invading army, executing surrendered or deserted enemy soldiers is generally considered bad in modern society, as outlined by this thing called The Geneva Convention.
3 Killing Roche
Choosing Politics Over Friendship
During the quest Reason of State, Roche reveals that he made a deal with Nilfgaard to restore the Temeria as a puppet state, but only after assassinating king Radovid. Dijkstra doesn’t like this idea too much, and will attempt to kill Roche to stop it, even trying to enlist Geralt’s aide in the process.
Players who skipped The Witcher 2 miss out the context that Roche and Geralt are, in fact, great friends. Regardless of your opinion on Nilfgaard, only a truly evil Geralt would suddenly find himself invested in politics enough to betray one of his closest friends and allies.
2 Killing Keira
Directly Or Indirectly
Keira Metz can be encountered in The Witcher 3 attempting to discover a cure to the Catriona plague. She plans to sell her research to King Radovid, the sorceress-hating ruler of Redania, in hopes that he will give her amnesty for doing so.
While one of Keira’s quests gives you the option to outright kill her, allowing her to go to Radovid to achieve the same result can be considered just as evil. If you do, you’ll encounter her corpse later in the game, displayed in public after her gruesome execution. Either way, this is one of the worst decisions Geralt can make.
1 Killing Ciri
Betraying Your Adopted Daughter
The end game in The Witcher 3 can feel brutal, but nothing is worse than accidentally, or intentionally, leading Ciri to her death at the hands of the Wild Hunt. This ending can only happen if Geralt constantly proves himself to be a bad father, undermining Ciri’s feelings and failing to support her in the second half of the game leading up to the final confrontation.
Because getting Ciri killed is a direct result of someone playing Geralt as intentionally cruel, emotionally distant, and a downright terrible father, it is by far the most evil choice you can make in the game.
